Actress Neve Campbell shocked “Scream” fans on Monday, June 6, when she revealed that she would not be appearing in the upcoming “Scream 6.”
Campbell served as the movie’s star, Sidney Prescott, in the film’s four movies; however, she did seem to take a backseat in “Scream 5” to give the newcomers to the franchise a chance in the spotlight.
Neve Campbell Explains Why She Won’t Return To ‘Scream 6’
As reported by Deadline, Campbell said, “Sadly I won’t be making the next Scream film” on Monday.
It looks like Campbell is leaving the franchise due to a contract dispute. Although the global franchise has grossed over $744 million dollars, it seems they couldn't reach an agreement as to how much her return was worth.
“As a woman, I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to Scream,” she continued. “I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise.”
“It’s been a very difficult decision to move on,” she said. “To all my Scream fans, I love you. You’ve always been so incredibly supportive to me.”
Campbell added, “I’m forever grateful to you and to what this franchise has given me over the past 25 years.”
An inside source told The Blast that directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett had been counting on her to return. As such, changes are going to need to be made to the script which could result in production delays.
David Arquette Calls A ‘Scream’ Movie Without Neve Campbell ‘Kind Of Unfortunate’
In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, David Arquette said, “I’d love for her to be a part of it. A Scream movie without Sidney is kind of unfortunate, but I understand her decision. It's all a business in a way, they have to balance all these elements to fit a budget and produce a film.”
“I get it, she's still alive,” he said, adding, saying that Campbell can “absolutely be in future ones, but I think it's up to fans to call for that in the future.”
“That is sudden,” he said of her departure, noting, “It's a business, though. I respect her decision, for sure.”
Arquette admitted that he hadn’t been “looped in” on the sixth movie, since his character didn’t survive Ghostface in “Scream 5.”
Who Will Be Returning For 'Scream 6'?
Although Arquette and Campbell won't be appearing in the upcoming horror movie, the next movie will feature the return of actress Hayden Panettiere, who will be reprising her character of Kirby Reed from “Scream 4.”
Back in March, Courtney Cox (Gale Weathers) couldn’t wait to share the news that she was ready to return. The four actors and actresses who managed to survive “Scream 5” will all be making their return: Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, and Jenna Ortega.
Actor Dermot Mulroney, best known for starring opposite Julia Roberts in 1997's “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” has also been cast as a cop in the upcoming film.
Although the plot of the new chapter in the franchise has yet to be unmasked, Deadline reported that the new film “continues with the four survivors of the Ghostface killings as they leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter.”
“Scream 6” is scheduled to start filming this month in Canada.
