Tom Cruise Reveals 'Top Gun: Maverick' Won't Debut On Streaming Platforms

"Mission Impossible" star Tom Cruise just revealed that his newest film, "Top Gun: Maverick," would only be released on the big screen. In addition to the role as the lead character, the 50-year-old also doubled as the producer for the 1986 "Top Gun" sequel.

The movie was initially supposed to be released in mid-2020 but was held up due to the ongoing pandemic. "Mission: Impossible— Dead Reckoning Part One" was also delayed due to the pandemic. Several studios resorted to releasing their movies on streaming sites due to the situation; however, Cruise revealed that the same wouldn't happen to "Top Gun: Maverick."

At the Cannes Festival for the movie, the actor shed light on his love for cinema and put his foot down on the topic of debuting "Top Gun: Maverick."

Cruise's "Top Gun: Maverick" will finally hit the big screens after taking several detours since the pandemic hit. The movie was initially set to be released on June 24, 2020, but the pandemic led to widespread social distancing and avoidance of public areas like the theaters.

Now years later, the 1986 "Top Gun" sequel, which cast Cruise as the lead, will be reportedly released to the public on May 27. The "Mission Impossible" actor was in attendance on Wednesday for the Cannes premiere of the sequel in the South of France.

During a Q&A session at the festival, the actor was asked if "Top Gun: Maverick" would be released to streaming platforms. Cruise then revealed that the move wasn't in the cards for him. Via Variety, he said, "They wouldn't dare. That's not going to happen, ever. That was never going to happen. Never. Not going to happen."

Cruise further revealed that sometimes he would go into cinemas quietly "with my cap on" and then sits in with the rest of the audience to enjoy a movie. The actor said, "I've spent a lot of time with theater owners. The people that serve the popcorn, the ones who made this [happen]."

While talking to theater owners, the 50-year-old said, "Please, I know what you're going through. Just know we are making 'Mission Impossible' and 'Top Gun' is coming out." The "Jack Reacher" actor shed light on the importance of cinema in bringing people of different cultures and backgrounds together to take part in one experience.

"Look at us all together," Cruise said. "We're all united. We're all speaking different languages, different cultures, different ideas about art or cinema or storytelling, but we are united in being able to come together as a community and share in a shared experience."

Cruise revealed that he spent time making his movies for audiences because he was "an audience, first and foremost." The actor added that he only made movies to be displayed on the broadest canvas possible, and it was not the same process as when making films for streaming services.

Cruise continued, "There's a very specific way to make a film for cinema, and I make movies for the big screen. I know where to go after that. And that's fine. But I always thought of a film not just for opening weekend but for the distance."

He added that he loved the experience of making lasting movies and didn't want to experience it alone. "I want this experience not just for myself, but I know there are so many people who want this experience. I want other filmmakers to have that experience and have that as an outlet."

"Top Gun: Maverick" reportedly received a standing ovation and rave interviews following its Wednesday Cannes premiere. Before the movie started, Cruise was awarded a surprise Palme d'Or which genuinely seemed to catch him off guard.'

While giving his speech on the stage of the Palais, Cruise revealed that "Top Gun: Maverick" was a dream, "This is an incredible evening and an incredible time ..just to see everyone's faces. It's been 36 years since the first' Top Gun,' and we've had to hold it years for the pandemic," the actor said.

Cruise continued, "This movie was a dream. We talked about it when filming. I just want to see everyone's faces. There's no masks, and we're in a movie theater. I'm going to take this all in, and I feel very grateful. We're here for you. I make all these movies for all of you, and I'm very blessed to do what I do. Enjoy this evening. You all have made my life."
