Read on to find out more.
Tom Cruise Was At The Movie Premiere
The premiere of “Top Gun: Maverick” was recently held on the deck of the USS Midway aircraft carrier in California, and Cruise piloted himself via helicopter to the star-studded event. As he walked the red carpet, he spoke with Nischelle Turner from ET about his happiness that the movie’s premiere had finally come.
Cruise said, “This is quite a moment. It’s been 36 years [in the making] for this film, the fans have been asking for it all around the world… I kept telling the actors, ‘It’s coming!’ I kept having to push the film off another year, another year, and I just said, ‘Look, we’re gonna have a great time when this opens.'”
“Top Gun: Maverick” is one sequel that fans have clamored for many years. The movie is already popular ahead of its release, and many fans are anticipating its wild action scenes and the references it’ll likely make to the classic first film.
Val Kilmer Is Back In The Movie
Several cast members from the original classic film also feature in the new sequel, such as fan-favorite actor Val Kilmer. He returned to his role as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, former rival and friend to Pete’ Maverick’ Mitchell, Cruise’s partner.
Cruise recalled how he had to fight to have Kilmer on the first “Top Gun,” even when the man himself refused to join the project. He said, “In the first one, I really rallied hard for him to be in the movie, because he’s such a tremendous actor, and [I wanted] to have him play that character.”
The “Jack Reacher” actor said he “told [director] Tony [Scott], ‘You gotta go and tackle this guy!’ I said, ‘Val, you gotta make this movie. You’re gonna be amazing.’ That’s the kind of talent that he has.”
Tom Cruise And Val Kilmer Share A Special Scene
Cruise also ensured that Kilmer would feature in the sequel, and now, after months of work, the film is done. The two reportedly share a very special and emotional scene in the movie. Cruise spoke about it and said, “You see that scene, and it’s very special. It’s just very special. He (Kilmer) is beautiful.”

During a press event, another actor from the sequel, Miles Teller, spoke to ET about the movie, the action sequences fans can anticipate, and the already famous scene between Cruise and Kilmer.
He was quite secretive about the scene but said, “It’s a really sensitive scene. It’s a sensitive kind of narrative when you’re bringing Val back and having a scene with [his character], Iceman. There’s one particular scene between Val and Tom that just, man, [hits you] right in the feels.”
Cruise Said Making The Movie Was Daunting
Despite Cruise’s excitement for fans to see the movie, he admitted that it was not easy and quite “daunting” to make a film that fans might not enjoy and appreciate as much as the hit original.
However, the 59-year-old actor also shared something he shared with his fellow cast from the sequel: “If you’re not sweating bullets doing this film, you shouldn’t be on this movie.” With his reputation as a hard-working actor, this statement is no surprise.
During his interview, Teller also praised Cruise for his work ethic and called him an “incredible actor and person.” He said, “I mean, we really did, we bonded, you know? And with the cast as well, just this flight training and everything we had to do was so intense. So that was a really good bonding experience for us.”
