Sadly, comedian Gilbert Gottfried has passed away.

His family posted a statement to his Instagram account, which read, “We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved Gilbert Gottfried after a long illness. In addition to being the most iconic voice in comedy, Gilbert was a wonderful husband, brother, friend, and father to his two young children. Although today is a sad day for all of us, please keep laughing as loud as possible in Gilbert’s honor. Love, the Gottfried family.”

In the late 1990s, Gottfried met Dara Kravitz at a Grammy Awards party. The couple wed in 2007 and had two children together: a daughter named Lily and a son named Max.

As soon as the news hit social media, many celebrities started to express their condolences for the legendary comedian and voice actor.

“Seinfeld” star Jason Alexander tweeted, “Gilbert Gottfried made me laugh at times when laughter did not come easily. What a gift. I did not know him well but I loved what he shared with me. My best wishes and sympathy to his family. #ripGilbertGottfried”

Brendan Kuty tweeted, “Gilbert Gottfried was SO good. Saw him at the Stanhope House a few years back. Small spot, maybe 75 people there, all sloppy. Went as hard as he would have on TV, such an incredible show.”

Hayden Schlossberg tweeted, “OH NO. Gilbert Gottfried was one of my idols. A comedian’s comedian if there ever was one. I wanted to work with him so badly. I hate this. RIP.”

Reporter Dave Itzkoff tweeted, “Years ago, Gilbert Gottfried let me visit him at home in NYC. In person he was an unexpectedly gentle guy who loved old showbiz and movie monsters – almost too shy to sit at a table and listen to his wife tell me the story of how they first met. #rip.”
