The “Wicked” star reposted a video of the little girl singing with the comment, “We see you. We really, really see you. 💙💛” She included a blue and yellow heart to indicate the colors of Ukraine’s flag. Although fans called for Menzel to meet this girl and sing the song together in Ukrainian, several others noted that the girl was actually singing in Russian.
The popular song won the 2014 Academy Award for Best Original Song and was on the Billboard Hot 100 for years following the movie’s 2013 release. Disney has since released the popular song in 42 different languages, including both Ukrainian and Russian.

Hundreds of Ukrainian civilizations are estimated dead after Russia invaded the country in late February and millions of Ukrainian citizens have fled their homes and sought refuge in other countries. Some have even taken to underground bunkers to escape the shelling of Ukrainian cities, such as the young girl in the video.
Citizens have been doing their best to try to fend off the Russian invasion, including Ukrainian actor Pasha Lee, who was killed while Russian military forces shelled the city of Irpin. He was only 33.
