As the dust of Kody Brown's divorce from Christine settles, he reflected on some incidents that showed their split was not a sudden decision.
Kody believes that their divorce was years in the making, but he did not know Christine had been unhappy in their marriage.
In a recent interview, the husband of three got candid about the moments leading to his split from his former wife.
Kody Brown's Split From Ex-Wife Was Years In The Making
Being married to four wives was not as easy as Kody may have expected when his third wife walked away. The famous husband opened up about their split according to the PEOPLE report of the Sunday, February 20 "Sister Wives" reunion special.
The ex-husband told host Sukanya Krishnan about the incidents leading to their divorce. He admitted that in some instances, he displayed arrogance rather than validating his ex-wife's emotions.
Kody noted that he was not aware Christine had doubts about remaining in a marriage with him and learned of her unhappiness while watching things unfold on "Sister Wives."
The husband to three recalled hearing speculations from his offspring that Christine kept saying she would file for a divorce but seemed too preoccupied to notice. He said:
"I mean, I had heard rumors from my children that she had been kind of throwing things around and even other wives saying, 'Oh, she's always threatened that she was going to leave.' And I'm like, 'Why am I in the dark here?'"
Christine's divorce from Kody is not a spur-of-the-moment action as the former husband called their split "a singular moment that has been building up for years."
Kody also accused the 49-year-old of having complaints about everything in her life. He also seemed to tire of fulfilling his duties as a husband to her.
The former husband went as far as calling the act trying to please his wife burdensome and chalked her displeasure to being in a polygamous union. In his words:
"I've been trying to make her happy all the time. It's this constant burden. There is something missing. There's some problem. Something is going on. Frankly, it could just be plural marriage."
It seems that Christine's bone of contention spreads past a plural marriage as Kody revealed he told her he no longer wanted to have any romantic intimacy with her before their divorce.
The TV personality said he built a door in their home, leading his then-wife to ask if the construction was for their privacy in the bedroom, but he clarified otherwise.
Christine then asked if they were ever going to be intimate again. Kody recalled:
"I never said no, that we were never going to be intimate again. I was at a point where I wanted her to address the rumors that I've been hearing from the kids that she was threatening to leave."
The former husband explained that he refused to have sex with his then-wife because he felt she was stabbing him in the back.
Despite withholding intimacy, Kody hoped that he and Christine would go for therapy. Things did not turn out as he wished, and she chose to walk away from what was left of their marriage.
The Blast disclosed that during season 16's tell-all episode preview, the patriarch told Krishnan he constantly questions his polygamous lifestyle, primarily when he converses with women who are “struggling in it because of the pain in it.”
Kody expressed that his family struggles propelled him to wonder why God called him to live in a plural marriage when his lifestyle is “a mess now.”
Christine Brown Says Standing Up To Ex-Husband Changed Their Marriage Dynamic
Christine got candid about how her marriage dynamic with Kody changed when she started saying no to the things that made her unhappy.
The Blast revealed that the ex-wife shared these sentiments with Krishnan in ET's preview clip of the "Sister Wives" special. She said,
I just had to be always positive and upbeat and ‘whatever you need’ and ‘absolutely.’ I didn’t mind. It was what I did. It was completely fine…until it wasn’t. All of a sudden, I just realized I couldn’t anymore.
Christine explained that she was inspired by a talk with her father, who asked when she would start saying no, adding that her decision to stand up for herself caused her and Kody to withdraw from each other.
