Joshua Bassett is getting candid about his past experiences with sexual abuse.
The singer, who dropped three new songs on Friday, December 3, opened up to GQ in a telling new interview.
Bassett’s three new songs “Crisis,” “Secret” and “Set Me Free” tell the story of his life around the time of the “Drivers License” drama involving Olivia Rodrigo.
He revealed it is now his time to tell his side of the story.
Bassett is finally telling his truth
“I have a right to stand up for myself,” he said while talking about the experience he went through earlier this year.
He’s also standing up for himself in other ways too.
The 20-year-old spoke candidly with the publication about his past sexual abuse.
“I experienced sexual abuse a lot in my childhood,” he said. “I didn’t remember that until last year, which is pretty insane. I buried it so far.”
Basset explained the sexual abuse routinely occurred when he was a teen at the hands of a much ‘older man.’

“I wasn’t able to see it for what it was at the time,” he admitted.
“Set Me Free,” one of the three new songs recently released, is about processing the experience.
Bassett deems it “an anthem for me and the sort of people who’ve held pain and power over me my whole life.
“You’ve taken so much from me, but you don’t get to take all of me,” he exclaimed.
The “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” actor will lend his experience on a podcast series dedicated to “heavy talks” that will launch in 2022.

He hopes the podcast will help “people experiencing that” and wants it to be “the podcast that I wish I had when I was a kid.”
Earlier this year, Bassett suffered heart failure around the same time the “Drivers License” love triangle drama took the media by storm.
In January, he revealed on social media that he had been suffering from a mystery illness, In June he made the shocking revelation in yet another cover for GQ.
“I thought it was, like, food poisoning or whatever. It got worse, it got worse, it got worse, it got worse,” the actor revealed.
He didn’t have a definite cause for the illness, but thought stress may have had something to do with it.
It was much worse!
“It turned out to be septic shock and heart failure. The doctors told me that I had a 30% chance of survival. They told me that if I had not checked into the hospital within 12 hours, I would have been found dead in my apartment,” Bassett revealed.
It’s been a wild year for the rising star, but it seems he’s forging a new path, HIS OWN path to success.
