Dennis Rodman Talks Sexuality Struggles During NBA Career

Dennis Rodman has never apologized for not being like the rest of the NBA stars. In a recent interview with GQ Rodman really opened up about the different odd episodes in his life. Revealing that he is kind of hurt that current NBA players don’t seek him out for advice on their games. The part of the interview though, that may be even more interesting involves Dennis talking about his sexuality. Although he’s never come out he’s never been shy about the company that he keeps!

The Gay Club Scene Potentially Saved Dennis Rodman’s Life

As we’ve mentioned there have been multiple scary episodes in Dennis Rodman’s life. Potentially none of them have been as scary as the one that occurred in the parking lot of the Detroit Pistons‘ Arena, The Palace at Auburn Hills. Long story short, Dennis was having suicidal thoughts, and he locked himself in his car with a shotgun. Ultimately he fell asleep with the gun in his lap, and was awoken by police the next morning with their guns drawn banging at his car window. After that incident Dennis decided that it was in his best interest to leave Detroit. Ultimately he was traded to San Antonio. In Texas, he found refuge in the gay community.

Rodman Wonders Of Coming Out Would Have Ended His NBA Career

These days there have been multiple stories of male athletes in top sports coming out. Although most of these stories are met with overwhelming support, there’s still some backlash. Back in the early 90s coming out may have been a death sentence to Dennis Rodman’s career. He recalls though that he had a great time in the drag and gay club scene in San Antonio saying,

“In San Antonio I started going to gay clubs. I started going to drag clubs. I started bringing drag queens to games.” Dennis would proudly go on to talk about what attracted him to that scene saying,  “When you talk to people in the gay community, someone who does drag, something like that, they’re so f—— happy,” says Dennis. “They hold their head up so high every f—— day, man. They’re not ashamed of s—. They’re not trying to prove anything, they’re just out there living their lives.”

Did Dennis Rodman Ever Come Out?

Although to this day Dennis Rodman’s never really announce his sexuality to the world it’s been assumed “fluid” for quite some time. Dennis did mention that he wonders what would’ve happened if he had made an official announcement back then. Ultimately, he believes that he would’ve found a way to stay in the league because of his talent. He was already not shying away from doing drag himself and things of that nature. Which, he also details came a bit naturally to him. His sisters had dressed him in women’s clothes for years when he was a kid. What’s clear from the interview is that Rodman is still unapologetically himself.
