Easy On Me

The song, titled "Easy On Me," is as painfully honest as audiences have come to expect from Adele, chronicling portions of her relationship with Simon Konecki and eventual divorce.

It was reported in April 2019 that the couple had broken up, with a publicist for the artist saying in a quote: "Adele and her partner have separated. They are committed to raising their son together lovingly. As always they ask for privacy."

The Song Goes Far And Beyond

Adele looks to be exploring the moment she gained the strength to quit her marriage, or at least the point she realized it was over, as the song begins. "There ain't no gold in this river / That I've been washin' my hands in forever," she sings in the first few sentences.

"I know there is hope in these waters / But I can't bring myself to swim / When I am drowning in this silence / Baby, let me in."

The Song Sounds Like A Dark Academia Poem

Adele appears to be stating that she tried to save the marriage but recognized it couldn't be repaired. She also sings of hope, which could be interpreted as her belief that she would find happiness in the future.

However, this first verse could also be intended towards the couple's 9-year-old son, Angelo, to whom Adele has devoted the album in a sought to explain the divorce.

"I just felt like I wanted to explain to him, through this record, when he's in his twenties or thirties, who I am and why I voluntarily chose to dismantle his entire life in the pursuit of my own happiness," she said in a certain interview. "It made him really unhappy sometimes. And that's a real wound for me that I don't know if I'll ever be able to heal."

Big Decisions Too Soon?

Adele encourages the person in question to "go easy" on her in the chorus of the song, stating that she "was still a child" and "didn't get a chance to feel the world" around her.

These lyrics could be a connection to Adele feeling like she married too soon – she was 24 when Angelo was born — before she had a chance to figure out what she wanted out of life, which may have influenced her decision to divorce. She recognized she "wasn't happy" during the marriage and decided to seek her own happiness instead, in her own words.

Much To Look Forward To

But it's in the second stanza that Adele really shines, stating with her customary candor that the marriage was irreversibly damaged and that she'd altered herself to prioritize her son and husband.

"There ain't no room for things to change / When we are both so deeply stuck in our ways," she sings. "You can't deny how hard I have tried / I changed who I was to put you both first / But now I give up."

So, now that we have one new song, what can we expect from the remainder of the album when it is released on November 19? "Divorce, babe, divorce," Adele said during the latest Instagram Live.

Adele will release her new album, '30', on November 19th.
