Nicki Minaj Sued by Tracy Chapman Over Leaked Song With Nas

Nicki Minaj might be sorry she sampled a Tracy Chapman song without permission because the legendary "Fast Car" sing has sued the "Queen" rapper for copyright infringement.

The song in question is called "Sorry" and it features Nas. It was supposed to be a part of Minaj's new album but she couldn't clear the Chapman sample — from the song "Baby Can I Hold You" — with the singer, so it was pulled.

According to court documents obtained by The Blast, Chapman claims Minaj's people reached out to her people in June of this year to see if she would sign off on the song. A few weeks later, through her business manager, Chapman declined.

Chapman claims that shortly after that, someone from Minaj's team reached out again saying Nick "was inspired" by Chapman and would like the chance to talk it over with her. But a few days later, Minaj tweeted (and has since deleted) that she did not even know "Sorry" sampled the Chapman song.

Nicki Minaj tweeted about the song often but ultimately did not include it on her album.

But on August 11, Chapman claims Minaj leaked the song to Funkmaster Flex who teased the song on his social media before playing it on HOT 97 that night.

Chapman claims the song then appeared on another radio show and soon made its way around the internet. At that point, she claims, the damage was done.

She is suing for copyright infringement and seeking an injunction barring Minaj from using the song again. She is also seeking unspecified damages.
