This Is Tom Hanks

Actor Tom Hanks has been around long enough that you would think the majority of us have some clue as to what he looks like, or can recognize his mannerisms, or have an idea about what he's been up to recently.

But there's a video circulating online from a recent episode of the quiz show "Jeopardy!" that shows that at least three contestants could not pick Hanks out of a lineup, and this is very disturbing news.

During the video clip, one of the contestants chose a video clue. Host Alex Trebek plays the video, and it's a quick scene from the new movie A Beautiful Day In the Neighborhood.

Hanks stars as Mister Rogers, everyone's hero, who appeared on the PBS children's show "Mister Rogers Neighborhood" for decades.

Hanks is shown putting on Mister Rogers' tennis shoes as he greets some kids on the set of the show.

The contestants were tasked with identifying the actor. And no one knew. The time ran out, and Trebek sadly had to give them the answer.

America Is Deeply Troubled

"Last night on Jeopardy nobody knew who Tom Hanks was and my already dwindling faith in humanity took another huge it," tweeted @Tashville401.

Someone else pointed out that the contestants really had no excuse for themselves. They were basically fed a picture of Hanks. There's no explanation for this behavior.

"I know you’re all dying for more Jeopardy content, but today none of the contestants knew that Tom Hanks was starring in the upcoming Mr. Rogers movie, and THERE WAS A PICTURE."

@cmclementi saw the incident differently, saying that it's a testament to Hanks' ability as an actor that he was able to just melt into the role of Mister Rogers.

The judges are skeptical of this claim. First of all, Hanks' "costume" was wearing a red sweater. His hair was slicked back and made gray, which maybe could throw people off. But we don't buy it.

"I am so very personally offended by this and I hope these @Jeopardy contestants are punished to the fullest extent of the law," wrote @fsmikey.

It does beg the question: What movies have these people seen? It is a known fact that "Jeopardy!" contestants need to be highly skilled and very very smart to even qualify to appear on the show. This means they probably read a lot, and don't spend as much time watching things like "Ren and Stimpy."

But still, "Jeopardy!" covers a lot of ground, and that includes pop culture.

Tom Hanks eclipses pop culture and has been entered into the daily lexicon of life. He was in You've Got Mail, he was in Big, he was in Joe Versus the Volcano.

He's been in dozens and dozens of films. We've now reached the day when Tom Hanks isn't recognized on a quiz show. America needs to check itself.
