Selena Gomez is opening up about her mental health with an old friend, Miley Cyrus, revealing on an Instagram live she is suffering from Bipolar Disorder.
The singer appeared on Cyrus’ new Instagram show ‘Bright Minded” where the duo discussed several issues including the recent diagnosis. Selena and Miley reunited after spending many years together as young actresses working with Disney.
“Recently, I went to one of the best mental hospitals in America, McLean Hospital, and I discussed that after years of going through a lot of different things, I realized that I was bipolar,” Selena told Cyrus.
She continued, “And so when I got to know more information, it actually helps me. It doesn’t scare me once I know it.”
The two stars spoke about dealing with their own issues day to day — “There are moments where I just have to center myself and let the thoughts come in. Sometimes I’ll write them down, and then completely just sit with, ‘What is it? What is the root of this? Why can I get to the bottom of this?’ And it really helps me.” Selena said.
On the show, the duo discussed dealing with anxiety and living life during these trying times. In the discussion, Cyrus revealed that the two reconnected thanks to a simple butterfly emoji.
“I’m just really happy that we did this new DM. It was very sweet because you just sent a butterfly emoji,” Miley said to Selena.
She added, “And that’s enough. Connecting with people and letting them know that you’re there. A butterfly emoji is totally enough.”
Selena has been dealing with several health-related issues including both physical and mental.
Several years ago, Gomez was diagnosed with Lupus. The disease recked havoc on her kidney’s and she needed a transplant to survive. As we reported, Selena’s BFF Francia Raisa stepped up and donated one of her kidneys to the actress.
The ‘Dance Again’ singer has also been hospitalized on several occasions due to her struggle with mental health. At one point, Selena was in such a bad place she tried ripping an IV out of her arm while trying to leave the hospital.
But, the good news…it seems Selena is now in a great place and is continuing to put out great music.
