De Niro Taps Cuomo For Inevitable Coronavirus Movie

Robert De Niro, 76, says New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo would be his top role to play if (and probably when) there is a movie made about the coronavirus.

De Niro let that bit of news slip while he paid a visit to "The Late Show With Stephen Colbert" on Wednesday night.

These days, Cuomo is known for his daily briefings on the pandemic and how it's affecting his state.

“He’s doing what a president should do,” De Niro said.

He even goes so far as to say that Cuomo can be a "backup" for president, in case something happens to Biden. What that could be, we have no idea.

“Though I’m for Biden and I want everything to go well for Biden, at least we have a person who is a very capable backup, if you will. If God forbid anything were to change, he’s good for the job. He’s doing what any president should do.”

De Niro said that Cuomo's past responses to disasters, for example, the Tribeca Film Festival after 9/11, showed that he can do the job.

“They were disastrous situations of a different sort and terrible things that happened, but as Cuomo’s saying, you learn from those experiences and how to handle them,” De Niro told Colbert.

Colbert reminded De Niro that the role of Dr. Fauci will be played by Brad Pitt, since Fauci has already expressed a desire for the actor to portray him, and Pitt did so on a recent episode of "Saturday Night Live."

But playing the good guy isn't usually De Niro's trademark. One of his best known roles is as Travis Bickle in the 1976 movie Taxi Driver. But even then, his character does a good deed by saving a prostitute. De Niro got an Oscar nomination for the part.

And politically speaking, it's no secret that De Niro, for lack of a better word, despises Donald Trump. The actor is very vocal about his political views.

At a film festival in Sarajevo that celebrated the 40th anniversary of Taxi Driver, De Niro said that Trump is "totally nuts."

Be Good For De Niro

“I don’t know, it’s crazy that people like Donald Trump ... he shouldn’t even be where he is, so God help us. What he’s been saying is really totally crazy, ridiculous ... he is totally nuts.”

“But I think now they are really starting to push back, the media ... finally they are starting to say, ‘come on Donald, this is ridiculous, this is nuts, this is insane."

Yes, everything about 2020 is insane. De Niro gets it right again.
