Actor Peter Fonda is apologizing for suggesting that 12-year-old Barron Trump be placed in a cage with pedophiles in response to the Trump administration's immigrant family separation policy.
"I tweeted something highly inappropriate and vulgar about the president and his family in response to the devastating images I was seeing on television," a rep for Fonda tells The Blast. "Like many Americans, I am very impassioned and distraught over the situation with children separated from their families at the border, but I went way too far. It was wrong and I should not have done it. I immediately regretted it and sincerely apologize to the family for what I said and any hurt my words have caused.”
On Tuesday, Peter Fonda went on a Twitter rant about Trump and his controversial zero-tolerance policy that separates immigrant children from their parents who are trying to illegally enter the US. In one of the tweets, Fonda suggested that Barron should be ripped from Melania Trump and caged with pedophiles.
Earlier this week, photos and videos of displaced migrant children crying out for their parents and being held in cages surfaced in the press, prompting a massive public outcry.
Peter Fonda immediately suffered a backlash for the tweet about Barron, which included a response from Donald Trump, Jr. who suggested Fonda was "a bully and a coward" for picking on the pre-teen.
At the time, President Donald Trump falsely blamed Democrats for the policy and called on Congress to fix the problem. After days of public outrage, the President finally gave in and signed an executive order to keep migrant families together.
The administration has not yet addressed the hurdle of reuniting the thousands of children who are scattered around the country after being taken from their parents at the border.
