Michelle Obama knows the power her name carries, which is why she had to personally sign off on the use of her famous moniker to sell swag like candles, pins and yoga mats.
According to documents obtained by The Blast, the former first lady was forced to file a consent statement to obtain a trademark registration for a merchandising line bearing the name of her upcoming book, "Becoming." The specific phrase Obama applied for is "Becoming Michelle Obama," and she plans on slapping the slogan on candles, tote bags, pillows, mugs and t-shirts.
Obama has been a big advocate for incorporating yoga into her workout routine, and also listed yoga mats to be branded with the title of her memoir.
Because she is a public figure, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office required proof that the ex-FLOTUS was giving permission to use her name. She gave her autograph, the document was accepted and you can bet on seeing tons of Michelle merchandise during a scheduled book tour next month, with her first stop -- of course -- being Chicago.
Also worth noting, the LLC Michelle used to register the trademark is "Renegade44, LLC." Barack Obama, the 44th president, was given the code name, Renegade, by the Secret Service during his time in office.
"Becoming," has been described by Obama as a "deeply personal experience," and will cover her journey to the White House and the public campaigns she took on, as well as her life as a mother and wife to President Obama.
The book release and tour is scheduled for November 13.
