The video, which was published on Twitter by a reporter who witnessed the launch, shows Hughes successfully blasting off in his rocket from the back of semi-truck. But, as you can see in the video, the parachutes which are supposed to carry the daredevil back to ground fly off of the rocket right after take-off.

'Mad' Mike and his partner Waldo Stakes, were reportedly trying to launch 5,000 into the air while riding a homemade steam-powered rocket.

"Mad Mike Hughes just launched himself in a self-made steam-powered rocket and crash-landed. Very likely did not survive. #MadMike #MadMikeHughes," reporter Justin Chapman tweeted along with the video of the crash.

According to reports, Hughes and Stakes are amongst three teams who are filming for the show and were working to get as close to space as possible. The groups objective was to get as close to the 'Karmen Line' or 62 Miles above the Earth's surface that is often thought to be the beginning of space.

Mad Mike's representative Darren Shuster told TMZ, "When God made Mike he broke the mold. The man was the real deal and lived to push the edge. He wouldn’t have gone out any other way! RIP."

One of the other teams is lead by Cameron Smith, who is creating his own spacesuit and will be attempting to ride in the suit on a cluster of hydrogen-filled weather balloons.

The last team, lead by Ky Michaelson, who is dubbed the 'real-life- rocketman' and is reportedly the first civilian to ever build a launch a crewless rocket into space. Obviously, in this case, the goal is to launch someone inside the aircraft this time.

The series which is a partnership with Discovery is supposed to premiere sometime in 2020. Mad Mike explained several days ago why and how he was going to complete his mission. See It Below...
