The 2020 Video Music Awards nominations were released today, and Lady Gaga is at the top of the heap with nine nominations. Seven of those nominations were for her juicy summer collaboration with Ariana Grande, "Rain On Me."

The song's bombshell video will be up against work by Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift, The Weeknd, Eminem ft. Juice WRLD, and Future ft. Drake in the Video of the Year category.

New artists Doja Cat and Megan Thee Stallion nabbed nominations for Song of the Year, but K-Pop stars BLACKPINK were snubbed from the nominations.

"Rain On Me" was released in May, but don't hold its early arrival against it. The dance pop song is considered one of the top tunes of the summer for good reason. It's buoyant and uplifting, and Lady Gaga's deeper voice anchors Grande's higher tones.

The video is a joy to watch as well. Using a hail of falling knives as an opening metaphor for rain was a surprising and effective visual for what the song is about - surviving a breakup. The purple tones and futuristic costumes in the video also give it that nostalgic feel.

Gaga is also up for Artist of the Year, competing against DaBaby; Justin Bieber; Megan Thee Stallion; Post Malone; and The Weeknd.

"Rain On Me" is also in the category for Best Collaboration, along with Future and Drake's "Life Is Good," Karol G and Nicki Minaj's "Tusa," and Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber's "Stuck With U."

There are two new categories this year -- Best Music Video From Home and Best Quarantine Performance. Hopefully both categories will be retired by the time next year's VMAs rolls around.

The 2020 MTV VMAs will actually be an in-person event held on Sunday, Aug. 30, at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. But don't line up to try to get a ticket -- this show will only have a limited audience, since we don't have this coronavirus thing under control.

Although Gov. Andrew Cuomo OK'd the event, there might not even be an audience, given that the pandemic is a constantly evolving situation.

No performers have yet been confirmed for the event, though the VMAs says it hopes to show performances from every New York City borough. And it's noteworthy that the Barclays Center was the site of Miley Cyrus' infamous twerking session in 2013. Given that 2020 has been off the chain since day one, the VMAs ceremony, however it might look, should be memorable.
