On December 21, court documents were filed revealing the musicians have worked out a deal with Lina Iris Viktor to drop the lawsuit against them. All claims will be dismissed and the entire case closed, per the deal.
Earlier this year, Viktor sued Kendrick and SZA over the music video for the song “All the Stars,” which was featured on the “Black Panther” soundtrack.
Viktor claimed her works — “Constellations I,” “Constellations II” and “Constellations III” — were knocked off and featured in Kendrick’s video, despite her previously refusing to give permission.
In the suit, she claimed to have been contacted twice by the film’s producers to ask her to allow the artwork to be featured in the movie or for her to create new art for the film. She says she shut them down both times they reached out.
Viktor claimed that despite her turning them down, they took her art and tried to recreate it in the music video. The artist said her work was copyrighted and they infringed on her copyrights.
Viktor sued seeking unspecified damages, plus an injunction against Kendrick and SZA from continuing to use her art.
Kendrick Lamar and SZA denied the allegations they ripped off her work. They argued the music video was independently created and no portions were ripped off from Viktor.
They claimed if any portions of the video are similar to her art, it was fair use and not copyrightable.
