How Has The Rock Not Played A Superhero Yet?

It's kind of insane to think that up until now, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson hadn't been snatched up by Marvel or DC. The man is as close to a real life superhero as it gets -- just check out his gym routine! -- and he's the current king of action flicks.

However, that all is about to change. While he's been unofficially attached to the project for years, Johnson officially announced his involvement in the upcoming DC film, Black Adam.

Joining The DC Universe

Johnson began his Instagram post, which features an awesome rendering by Boss Logic of the actor as the classic villain, by opening up about his affinity for superheroes since he was a young boy.

"Like most kids growing up, I dreamed about being a superhero. Having cool superpowers, fighting for what’s right and always protecting the people. It all changed for me, when I was 10yrs old and was first introduced to the greatest superhero of all time — SUPERMAN. As a kid, Superman was the hero I always wanted to be."

Doing Things His Own Way

However, the Jumanji star admitted that he wasn't quite cut out for the straight and narrow path that a hero like Superman walks.

"But, a few years into my fantasy, I realized that Superman was the hero, I could never be. I was too rebellious. Too rambunctious. Too resistant to convention and authority. Despite my troubles, I was still a good kid with a good heart — I just liked to do things my own way. Now, years later as a man, with the same DNA I had as a kid — my superhero dreams have come true."

Johnson continued, expressing his joy about officially playing the anti-hero Black Adam.

"I am honored to join the iconic #DCUniverse and it’s a true pleasure to become, Black Adam. Black Adam is blessed by magic with the powers equal to SUPERMAN, but the difference is he doesn’t toe the mark or walk the line."

Is It A Sequel To 'Shazam?'

Now, in the comic books, Black Adam was a villain who fought the hero Shazam. Now, Shazam! ended up being a critical and commercial hit for DC, part of the sea change that is slowly convincing fans that DC movies can be good again. Will Black Adam be a Shazam! sequel? Unknown, but Johnson promises a good time regardless.

"He’s a rebellions, one of a kind superhero, who’ll always do what’s right for the people — but he does it his way. Truth and justice - the Black Adam way. This role is unlike any other I’ve ever played in my career and I’m grateful to the bone we’ll all go on this journey together."

Black Adam hits theaters December 22, 2021.
