We’ve been having to say this a ton lately, but once again … sorry for the spoilers! This is a story though that just has to get told. Many times people just think athletes can’t have any more hidden talents. Dwight Howard last night on the masked singer proved that some people are just gifted with all of the talents in the world. He wasn’t dunking a basketball with a superman cape on last night. He was singing "Tutti Frutti" by Little Richard dressed as an octopus on The Masked Singer, and he totally killed it!
Everything Was Over The Top
It’s not every day that you get to see a six-foot ten-inch tall purple octopus walk out on stage. Before he even started singing Howard had the judges amazed. The inevitable sound bite had to come across with the judges agreeing, that the purple octopus was the tallest contestant that they had ever had on the show. That’s probably a true statement. After the event, Dwight talked to PEOPLE, about his experience on the show. On why, he liked the idea of being an octopus he mentioned,
"This octopus and I, we're kind of like the same, we've been misunderstood for most of all our life. ... People are afraid of it, but once they get around the octopus and they see how cool the octopus is, how smart it is, they have a different view.”
The Idea Of Being Misunderstood
Through his appearance on the show, Dwight made it clear that an important theme for him was feeling misunderstood. He even had that as one of his clues, and it was the whole theme behind his intro video. In it, he said that people misjudged him because he liked to smile, and that was taken as him not being serious about his work. Using his appearance to share life lessons with the audience Dwight mentions,
"I think all of us in our lives and during our journeys, there are chapters of our lives like a book," He then went on to say "We have those moments where we feel like we hit rock bottom. I've had moments in my life where I've felt like that, where it was either an injury or something has happened to where I felt like I had to have a reset, and I've had that happen multiple times."
Mom’s Favorite Show
There’s no question that Dwight took his opportunity and ran with it! We’re talking about being on the show, not his NBA career. He not only used his appearance to show off his singing skills but also to fulfill his mom’s dream. Dwight says that “The Masked Singer” is her favorite show. She had an opportunity to be on set with him. Howard detailed the experience saying,
“Once she saw the sign that said Masked Singer, she put two-and-two together, she said, "This is my surprise?" She was just so happy and full of joy that, she was just in tears of happiness and all that stuff. It was a great moment.”
Ken Jeong Had Some Insight Into Dwight’s Abilities
Ken Jeong was the only one of the judges to guess Dwight’s identity correctly. One of the guesses was Shaq. Whom, Dwight hasn’t always had a great relationship with. However, he took that in stride mentioning that he figured Shaq was going to be one of the guesses just because of his height. On why Ken Jeong was able to guess his identity correctly it’s probably because he had some inside information about Dwight Howard’s talent that the rest of us did not have. Dwight revealed that the two had worked together saying,
“Me and him actually did a show together and, we did a commercial for Adidas. Me and him sang on that show together so he kind of guessed from there, that's why I figured he would kind of get it right.”
