Many celebrities bagged awards at the 73rd Primetime Emmys and writer, Michaela Coel was no exception.
Coel won an Emmy for Outstanding Writing in a Limited Series, Movie, or Dramatic Special for her BBC/HBO series, “I May Destroy You.”
In the 12-part show, she recalled a very personal experience of hers. She gave a fictionalized version of the time she was drugged and sexually assaulted by two men.
Though she was open about that experience and other painful incidents that happened to her, Coel was tight lipped about her dating life. Since her rise to fame, she kept much of her personal life out of the limelight, especially details of her love interest.
Seeing as she doesn’t say so much about that part of her life, there’s only one question on fans minds; Is the actor currently in a relationship?

Michaela Coel Is A Private Person
Since the premiere of her award-winning HBO drama series “I May Destroy You,” Coel has shared a lot of her life with the public through her work.
The series explored the main character’s journey of personal identity while it also tackled the concept of consent and the reality of people after sexual assaults.
The main character’s story was loosely based on Coel’s own life after she was raped in 2016.
Over the past few years, the screenwriter has spoken openly about that traumatic time and has stood in solidarity with survivors of sexual assault.
Despite getting candid about that painful incident, not everything the actor experienced in her life is public knowledge.
When The Guardian mentioned that she had a boyfriend in a 2018 interview, Coel refused to talk about him to protect his privacy and hers.
“I used to be really loose with the amount of information I put out on social media because in the beginning, I was not a known poet. I have to sell this place out, or I’m not gonna break even – so I soon discovered that my personality is a way to draw people in,” she told the publication. “As my career has stabilized, I feel like I need to retreat more,” she concluded.
After her interview with The Guardian, it was rumored that Coel was in a relationship with her “Chewing Gum” co-star Kadiff Kirwan. However, the rumors subsided when reports confirmed that the pair was just friends.
Since then, there has been no word on Coel’s relationship status or if she hung out with anyone romantically.
Though her dating life has remained private, Coel was very plain about her feelings towards love. She shared in a previous interview that she’s pretty indifferent when it comes to romance.
During an interview with Culture Trip in 2018, the “Been So Long” actor revealed that she identified as aromantic. She also explained that an expressive show of romance did nothing for her.
“I googled aromanticism and I very much felt like, ‘Oh, that’s me.’ Which means if you tell me to dress up nicely because we’re going to go to dinner with candles, it’s not going to mean a lot to me,” she said.
“It’s a waste of money and I have ingredients at home. Things like weddings and the expense of these things — I would rather settle for the rest of my life with a person.”
“I am OK being by myself. I like having intimate relationships but I don’t want to change people or want to be changed by anyone. Diamond rings don’t make me happy.
…Flowers don’t make me smile. I can’t smell them,” Coel shared. “I want to know who you are.”
Coel Found Success After ‘Chewing Gum’ With ‘I May Destroy You’
Though “Chewing Gum” was a success, it was Coel’s show, “I May Destroy You” that truly drew the attention of Hollywood. It was even optioned by Netflix, but she refused due to certain restrictions she wasn’t comfortable with.
The show centered around the main character, who tried to cope in the aftermath of her sexual assault. It also boasted of both sad moments and instances of lighthearted joy.
The limited series earned Coel three Emmy nominations for writing, directing, and acting as well as a BAFTA win for her depiction of Arabella, the main character.
What is Coel’s Net Worth In 2021?
After the back and forth with Netflix, “I May Destroy You” eventually found a home with HBO.
This was without the restrictions that Netflix was offering. And, because the show was exceptional, people eagerly awaited whatever Coel chose to do next.
As a result of her work as an actor and writer, the Brit was already worth $2 million.
This was according to The List and there was a high chance that her bet worth would increase as she continued to sign on to new projects.
Recently, she was cast in the Black Panther sequel, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” which is set to premiere in 2022.
