Formula One legend Michael Schumacher has a new documentary on Netflix. The streaming service is hoping to capitalize on the success of “Drive to Survive” with more Formula One content for fans. The documentary is set to explore all of the high points in Schumacher’s career. Sadly, his current situation is not great after a skiing accident left him sustained with major and lifelong injuries. Current Formula One driver, and Michael’s son Mick Schumacher got very personal in the biopic when talking about the fact that he literally cannot speak with his father.
How We Got Here
Back in December of 2013, Schumacher suffered a skiing accident while on holiday with his son Mick and other friends. The former race car driver hit his head on a rock and was knocked unconscious. As a result of the incident, he suffered a severe brain injury that has literally confined him to a bed for years. Updates on his actual condition though have been hard to come by since the date of the incident. Now, in the documentary, his family members are opening up about what the former champion’s everyday life is really like.
Still Trying To Keep His Condition Private
“‘Private is private,’ as he [Michael] always said. It’s very important to me that he can continue to enjoy his private life as much as possible. Michael always protected us and now we are protecting Michael.”
Mick Wishes He Could Speak To His Father
To be honest any part of the series where Michael’s current condition is discussed is an emotional moment. Potentially none of the moments in the documentary are more emotional than when Mick, Michael’s son, is speaking about his father. In doing so he revealed an important detail about his current condition. Which, sadly, is the fact that the former champion can’t really speak or fully communicate. Mick mentioned,
“I think Dad and me, we would understand each other now in a different way now. Simply because we speak a similar language, the language of motorsport. And that we would have so much more to talk about.” he then added, “That’s where my head is most of the time. Thinking that it would be cool. That would be it. I would give up everything just for that.”
The Son’s F1 Career
In multiple scenes, in the documentary series, Mick Schumacher calls his dad his hero. While saying that every time that he still looks at him, he thinks that’s who he wants to be. He’s been able to follow in his father’s footsteps in the motorsport world. As he secured a drive with the Haas F1 team this season. After winning the GP2 series last year. Although his time with the Haas team hasn’t been ideal driving a car that can’t find its way out of the last places on the grid the son of the great German driver is still keen to be like dad!
