Let's rewind to the year 2014.
Covid-19 didn’t exist, mask-wearing was a foreign idea and John Travolta had one of the BIGGEST flubs in Oscars history.
If you’re not familiar with what happened at the 2014 Oscars or you're too young to know, please, sit back and enjoy!
Disney’s “Frozen” had recently come out in November 2013 and the Academy Awards are typically held in February. “Frozen” was all anyone could talk about and sing along to.
“Let It Go,” was among the many iconic songs to come from the movie’s soundtrack, it was performed by Idina Menzel and was nominated for an Academy Award in 2014. It ended up winning the Oscar for “Best Original Song.”
Anyways, back to Travolta.
He had the honor of introducing Menzel’s performance of “Let It Go” to the audience; however, he must’ve not done his research prior to announcing her name.
Does “Adele Dazeem” ring any bells.
“There will always be a special place in my heart for the movie musical, and for the songs that create their most memorable moments,” Travolta said setting up Menzel’s performance. “Here to perform the Oscar-nominated, gorgeously empowering song, 'Let It Go,' from the Oscar-winning movie, 'Frozen' please welcome the WICKEDLY talented, one and only, Adele Dazeem."
The WICKEDly wrong, John Travolta!
Alright, so you’re all caught up to speed… now, let’s get to Menzel recalling this particular moment on a recent episode of James Corden's “Carpool Karaoke.”
On the September 8 episode of Corden’s popular sing-along segment, the cast of “Cinderella” starring Camila Cabello, Billy Porter and Menzel joined the talk-show host in his black Range Rover.
“Cinderella” was released on Amazon on September 3 and sees Cabello as the leading lady, Porter as the Fab GAWDMother and Menzel as the evil stepmother.
Corden asks the “Wicked” actress if she ever gets nervous before performing and she recalled being the most nervous before her performance at the 2014 Oscars.
Idina Menzel recalls that 'Adele Dazeem' moment!
“Yeah, it was the eight seconds after he [Travolta] screwed up my name.” Menzel revealed. “At first, I felt really sorry for myself, like Meryl Streep’s out there, this is my big break. And he just f***ed up my name.”
She continued, “Eigh seconds and the band starts and I’m like, ‘Get your s*** together. Come on this is your moment. Stop worrying that he messed up your name. Sing, b****.”
Menzel explained that prior to her performance she had meditated on the moment, sang to her son to put ‘everything into perspective’ and within eight seconds all of that went out the window.
Despite the massive eff-up, in hindsight Menzel revealed it was “the greatest thing that has ever happened to me.”
Best Thing Ever!
Porter noted that her being called ‘Adele Dazeem’ only made her MORE FAMOUS!
“I was sitting in my house and he said your name wrong and I said, ‘she’s going to be a household name within 24-hours,” the “Pose” star expressed.
Menzel revealed Travolta has written her a number of nice, apologetic emails and sent flowers.
She told him, “No worries honey, because it’s the best thing that has ever happened to me.”
