The therapist who spent years counseling the Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann is facing criminal charges after authorities accused her of practicing without the required professional license and improperly collecting insurance payments.

According to a bombshell Newsday report, court records show that 52-year-old Alison Winter was arrested in November 2024 and charged with grand larceny, scheme to defraud, and unauthorized practice of a profession.

Prosecutors allege that she provided mental health counseling services between 2018 and 2024 without holding the required license, while collecting approximately $60,000 in insurance reimbursements, including nearly $50,000 from Cigna. Authorities also claim she received payments through Medicare and UnitedHealthcare.

Winter’s case has attracted additional attention because of her connection to Rex, who recently admitted responsibility for the deaths of eight women.

After years of denying involvement, Rex pleaded guilty to seven murders and acknowledged intentionally causing the death of an eighth victim.

For more than a decade, investigators searched for the person known as the “Gilgo Beach Serial Killer,” a nickname derived from the discovery of multiple victims near Gilgo Beach on Long Island.

The case witnessed a major breakthrough in 2023 when DNA evidence reportedly linked Rex to one of the victims, leading to his arrest.

Before entering his guilty plea, Rex met separately with his former wife, Asa Ellerup, and their daughter, Victoria Heuermann.

According to the New York Post, Winter was present for those conversations, which are featured in the Peacock documentary “The Gilgo Beach Killer: House of Secrets.”

Ellerup, who was married to Rex for 27 years before filing for divorce after his arrest, recalled confronting him about the killings. She said he appeared “very nervous” during their meeting as she asked how many women he had murdered.

According to Ellerup, Rex admitted that eight women were victims and claimed that seven of the killings took place inside the family’s home in Massapequa Park, New York. Reflecting on the conversation, she said his voice and mannerisms occasionally reminded her of the man she had known for decades, though she felt he showed no genuine remorse.

Victoria also described a similarly unsettling conversation with her father. She said she entered the meeting seeing him as her “dad, the man, not necessarily the monster.”

When she asked about his motive, she claimed he attributed the killings to “demons” and dark urges that he considered a “sickness.”

Therapist Details The Serial Killer’s Four-Day Murder Routine

The therapist, Winter, claimed Rex described the murders as part of a carefully planned ritual that evolved over time.

She alleged that he referred to the process as a “four-day high” or “four-day adrenaline rush,” beginning with preparing the basement in his home, known as the “kill room,” followed by luring and killing a victim, disposing of evidence, and reserving a final day to address any complications.

According to Winter, Rex became increasingly focused on perfecting the process. She claimed he timed how quickly he could dispose of bodies near Gilgo Beach and grew more efficient with each killing.

By the final murder, he reportedly boasted that it took him “only 37 seconds to drop the body.

“He would hit the timer, dump the body, get back in the truck and hit the timer again,” Winter said. “Clearly, he enjoyed killing, and it became a sickness for him. It became an outlet. It became an obsession.”

Meanwhile, despite the horrific allegations tied to the home, Ellerup revealed that she has continued living in the Massapequa Park property since Rex’s arrest, and has even turned the basement, which was said to have been used as a “kill room,” into her primary bedroom.

Ellerup said the decision was driven in part by a personal sense of spirituality and a desire to honor the victims.

“Now, there’s me. I’m in this room, and I’m here because I do feel spiritual,” she explained. “I am trying to say, spiritually in my own way, that I am really sorry for what these victims went through.”

She noted, however, that the basement no longer resembles the space investigators described. According to Ellerup, the area has “been completely gutted and redone, new floor, new walls, new moldings, new doors.”

While the room’s appearance has been completely transformed, she said the emotional weight of what happened there remains impossible to escape.

“I am haunted by dreams every night,” Ellerup noted. “It will never go away. It will follow me for the rest of my life.”
