Zohran Mamdani is drawing widespread praise online for his hands-on, community-focused interaction with local and visiting fans during the recent Panama versus England match at the ongoing World Cup.

In a video that’s trending online, the NYC mayor can be seen helping fans fasten armbands on their wrists, which grant them access to the stadium.

He appeared cheerful throughout the interaction and did not seem bothered by the rain. Mamdani also took the time to warmly greet fans and shake hands, creating a memorable experience for many supporters.

Several fans took to the comments section to praise Mamdani, with many specifically highlighting his friendliness.

“He’ll really show up for everything. I can’t remember the last time I saw a politician show up for this many small things that matter so much collectively,” a Reddit user wrote.

“He seems to be everywhere, and still manages to run NYC; when does he sleep?” one user said, while another added, “How is he so normal and different from the other politicians? He kinda reminds me of Obama’s charm.”

Someone else used the opportunity to take a swipe at Donald Trump, writing, “It really confuses me how America elected a skintag like Trump, and also elected a f-cking hero like this guy.”

“Something about Mamdani’s smile just feels so genuine. Like he’s actually there because he wants to be, not just to have a media moment,” another user penned.

Zohran Mamdani Criticizes High World Cup Costs For Fans

While he has been actively involved in helping fans around the stadium, Mamdani has also been a vocal critic of the high prices fans have had to pay to attend the games.

During the opening round, ticket prices ranged from $350 to $5,000, making this year’s edition one of the most expensive ever.

Fans have also seen sharp increases in hotel prices and transportation costs. The situation sparked frustration among supporters, resulting in a cut in the price of buses and trains to World Cup games. However, the current price is still reportedly 10 times higher than it was.

According to the BBC, the football governing body FIFA is set to make about $9 billion from the tournament, and Mamdani said officials could have made the games more affordable.

“We made it clear from the beginning we wanted this to be a World Cup for everyone,” he told the news outlet.

“New Jersey transport has tickets to get to the stadium that are nearly $100. It’s a decision they’ve made, and I also empathize that they had to make that decision so they aren’t running a loss,” he continued. “Part of that is a reflection of the host city agreement with FIFA. I think there is more than enough generated not just at this World Cup but at every World Cup, so those costs are covered, and fans are not the ones having to bridge that deficit,” Mamdani added.

Mamdani Touts Free Fan Zones Across NYC

The mayor went further to explain that New York had managed to bring some relief to fans by providing free fan zones across the city.

“When you saw those ticket prices, there was a fear for how everyone would be able to be a part of this,” he said. “I’m proud we secured 1,000 tickets at $50 for each game, and we have fan fests, one in each borough, for free.”

“We want this to be a moment where tourists and New Yorkers alike can rediscover this city. We have 900 bars and restaurants that have signed up for our $26 World Cup meal deal. We want affordability and everyone to be a part of this tournament,” the mayor continued.

“It’s part of fighting back against the commodification of sports, the insistence that it becomes yet another luxury product,” he added.

On Saturday, Mamdani joined several young Americans at the East Harlem pool to officially kick off the summer pool season.

The popular politician appeared carefree as he took part in the tradition, though he broke the dress code in the process. The Big Apple’s rules require all swimmers to wear bathing suits in the water, but the mayor turned up in a suit and even kept his black socks on as he took the plunge.

His antics excited young fans and other swimmers.

“It was so fun. I didn’t think he would do it! And then he shook my hand. That felt amazing,” 12-year-old Mila Mader said, per the New York Post. “I told my brother, Leo, I was like, ‘Oh my God, the mayor shook my hand.’ He shook my brother’s hands, too.”

According to the news outlet, Mamdani committed to doing it after Katie Honan of The City pressed him and asked if he would be willing to continue the practice of mayors jumping into pools on opening day.

“I’m gonna be honest, I may do it. I may commit to it,” he said in March.
