Prince Harry‘s hopes of bringing Meghan Markle and their children to Britain next month have been thrown into uncertainty after a fresh dispute over security arrangements.

A trip expected to reunite the Sussexes with King Charles and mark the countdown to the 2027 Invictus Games has instead become overshadowed by renewed tensions, leaving important family plans hanging in the balance.

Prince Harry had planned to return to Britain in early July to launch the countdown to the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham.

The visit was expected to include Meghan Markle, Prince Archie, and Princess Lilibet, along with private family moments, including a possible reunion with King Charles and a visit to Althorp Estate, where Princess Diana is buried.

The trip would have been especially meaningful for Archie and Lilibet, who have not seen their grandfather since the family’s visit for Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022.

Those plans were thrown into doubt after Harry learned that his request for a review of his family’s police protection had been rejected.

The decision reportedly left him questioning whether it was safe for Meghan and their children to travel to Britain.

Security Concerns Force Plans Into Doubt

In response, Harry’s spokesperson made clear that security remains the central issue.

“The Duke continues to explore every available option to enable the visit to proceed safely and to give his children the opportunity to enjoy the UK,” the spokesperson said per the Daily Mail.

The statement also addressed reports that King Charles had offered the Sussexes accommodation at a royal residence during the visit.

“Safe accommodation is only one element of an effective protective security plan because risk follows the person, not the place. The issue has never been accommodation. The issue is whether appropriate and proportionate protective security is being provided throughout the entirety of the visit,” the spokesperson continued.

The spokesperson added that questions remain over the review process itself, noting, “The independent Risk Management Board that Ravec itself decided was necessary last November has still not taken place. It is therefore difficult to understand how the proportionality of the current arrangements can credibly be maintained without that independent assessment.”

The Sussexes are currently believed to be spending time at their holiday property in Portugal, but reports suggest Harry is now reconsidering whether Meghan, Archie, and Lilibet should travel to Britain at all.

Sources close to Harry insist the decision makes little sense, especially given his position as the King’s son and the place his children occupy in the line of succession.

One insider described the refusal to provide full protection as “bizarre,” while another blamed senior royal aides involved with the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures, known as Ravec.

The same source questioned why other high-profile public figures have received police protection under certain circumstances while Harry’s family continues to face restrictions.

According to ITV News, those close to Harry believe the delayed review is linked to the involvement of representatives from Buckingham Palace and Prince William’s office on the committee responsible for security decisions.

Travel Plans Thrown Into Fresh Uncertainty

The uncertainty has dramatically altered plans that only a day earlier appeared settled. On Friday, Harry’s team circulated details of the family’s intended itinerary. Less than 24 hours later, the visit was reportedly being reconsidered.

A second source explained how quickly events changed, noting, “Their plans to see family… and visit charitable causes close to the Duke’s heart have been pulled out from under their feet at the 11th hour. He’s looking at every option to get the family here safely.”

One possibility now being explored would involve flying Archie and Lilibet into Britain from mainland Europe for only a single day, reducing the amount of time they would spend outside protected locations.

While Harry remains determined for his children to reconnect with their grandfather, the latest disagreement has created fresh strain behind palace walls.

A royal insider told the Daily Mail that what should have been a positive opportunity has instead become increasingly complicated.

“Harry really wants his children to see their grandpa. It’s not clear how keen the King is to see them if it involves all these theatrics,” the insider said.

They added, “Unfortunately, what should have been a chance to build bridges has led to more mistrust on both sides.”

According to the same source, Harry was angered after details emerged suggesting the Sussexes could stay at Buckingham Palace during the visit.

“Harry is furious that the King’s aides leaked plans for the Sussex family to stay at Buckingham Palace for part of the visit. He feels that has endangered his family because, while they are protected by the security cordon when they are inside the palace, they are vulnerable as soon as they leave it,” they continued.

The insider also argued that Frogmore Cottage had previously offered greater flexibility, noting, “At least when they were living at Frogmore Cottage there were several exits from the Windsor estate that made it more difficult for them to be spotted and followed. But of course, they were evicted from there to punish them for quitting.”

The source concluded, “Harry is now looking at alternative royal accommodation for part of the stay as well as somewhere else that is privately owned.”
