A 2003 MTV Movie Awards footage has sparked renewed controversy following the death of former child actress Daveigh Chase.

In the footage, Sean “Diddy” Combs, then 33, is seen approaching 12-year-old Chase backstage after she won an award for her role as Samara Morgan in “The Ring.” Holding a drink, he asks her, “You coming to the after-party tonight?” to which she appears to nod. Diddy responds with a laugh and an emphatic “Yeah!”

Chase had earlier been on stage during the live broadcast, where she was presented with the award alongside Ashton Kutcher, who was 25 at the time.

During her acceptance moment, Kutcher leaned in to encourage her, telling her she was “doing so good” and gently touching her arms while she spoke. Kutcher was also present backstage when Diddy extended the invitation, but did not intervene beyond laughing at the exchange.

Diddy Has Come Under Renewed Scrutiny Over The Resurfaced Clip

The resurfaced video has drawn attention amid broader scrutiny of Diddy, who has faced multiple legal battles in recent years.

In 2025, he was found guilty on two federal counts related to transporting individuals for prostitution and later received a 50-month prison sentence, which has since been adjusted.

He was cleared of more serious allegations, including sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy, after a high-profile trial.

With the resurfaced video going viral online, the rapper is being slammed again over his highly publicized legal troubles.

Over on X, a person said, “Yeah, this whole thing is just another reminder that Hollywood has had a serious dark side for way too long.”

“Just absolutely weird,” another noted. “People will say that folks are reading too much into it. But there’s a pattern that you see with these folks. It’s just like Epstein.”

Daveigh Chase’s Sudden Death Leads To Revelation About Unclaimed Earnings, Reportedly In The Millions

Chase, best known for voicing Lilo in Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch,” was recently found deceased in Los Angeles while reportedly living in difficult conditions.

Authorities indicated that severe malnutrition and complications from meningitis and sepsis contributed to her death.

According to her longtime manager, John Ryan, Chase had accumulated substantial unclaimed earnings over the years from her early acting career, including residuals and merchandising royalties tied to her work with Disney.

He said she was entitled to ongoing payments from her performance as a child star rather than a single upfront fee, and that SAG-AFTRA records repeatedly showed unpaid funds linked to her name.

Ryan claimed that, over the years, significant sums, reportedly in the millions, remained untouched as Chase allegedly struggled with long-term substance abuse issues. He also said attempts were made to reach her and help recover the funds, but contact was often lost as she was “too far gone,” allegedly hooked on heroin and fentanyl.

Ryan added that in cases like this, any remaining royalties or benefits typically pass to next of kin, which could place responsibility on her surviving family members to access the funds.

Reports circulating online in late 2025 showed Chase in an extremely fragile state while living in a trailer in the Skid Row area of Los Angeles, prompting concern from those who knew her.

Her manager and stepsister reportedly worked with a private investigator in an effort to locate her and provide assistance, but she later went missing again.

Chase was reportedly hospitalized shortly before her death on June 17. Around the same period, a GoFundMe campaign allegedly launched by someone claiming to be close to her surfaced online, though her manager has questioned its legitimacy.

“Apparently, a man claiming to be her ‘boyfriend’ that none of us friends or her family has heard of has set up a GoFundMe on ‘her and her family’s behalf’ that he set her up as the organizer. I can confirm Daveigh has a trust account set up at SAG to cover all costs,” he told the New York Post.

In a detailed statement to Deadline, Ryan pushed back against the fundraising campaign, urging the public not to donate.

He said Chase’s estate already had sufficient resources to cover her cremation and related arrangements, adding that her family was fully in charge of handling expenses. Ryan identified Chase’s father, John Schwallier, as her legal next of kin and stated that no legal authority had been granted to any individual claiming to be her boyfriend.

According to him, the GoFundMe page circulating online was not authorized by Chase’s family or estate.

“That GoFundMe is not going toward ANY expenses for Daveigh,” he said. “Myself, her father, her uncle, and all of us close friends who knew her for decades are encouraging people not to donate to this page. This man making these claims brought her into the hospital in terrible condition and didn’t let any of the family know until she passed so he can control the dialogue. Daveigh’s actual family is handling all arrangements, we have contacted GoFundMe to let them know this man started this page on his own under Daveighs name when she was already unresponsive and urging people to report the page and not donate.”

Ryan also accused the individual behind the fundraiser of exploiting Chase’s death for personal gain. He said there were no outstanding medical or funeral costs requiring public contributions and described the claims attached to the campaign as misleading.

“As far as I’m concerned, with the condition this man brought her to the hospital, he should be in jail,” he added. “Myself and the family are sickened at the condition she was in before she passed. This guy’s trying to make it look like a Romeo and Juliet situation to benefit his own pockets.”
