The U.S. Men’s National Team kicked off its World Cup campaign with a convincing victory, defeating Paraguay 4-1.
The team’s dazzling performance has drawn praise from all quarters, with some even tipping it to become the long-awaited turning point for soccer and sports in the country.
Meanwhile, social media has been sent into a frenzy as visiting fans from other countries express shock and awe at American sports culture, particularly the scale of the stadiums.
USMNT’s Big Win Fuels Soccer Breakthrough Talk
For generations, soccer in America has not reached the heights many hoped for, with fans often clinging to the promise of tomorrow whenever the team stepped onto the international stage.
Before last Friday’s World Cup opener, the team had played 37 matches at the world’s biggest competition but had won just nine. Even more telling, six of those wins had come in the last 76 years, with only one by more than a goal.
But with the 4-1 victory against Paraguay, where Folarin Balogun and Giovanni Reyna got their names on the scoresheet, the team may be onto something special as coach Mauricio Pochettino appears to be working his magic.
The greatest impact may have been felt off the field, as thousands of Americans marched into the stadium carrying red smoke flares. Many stood in the stands, enthusiastically cheering the team; parents hugged their children, while others gathered in pubs and public spaces to watch the game.
Millions Tune In For USMNT’s Big Moment
Americans also appear to be finding faith in the team again, and many who were not at the game showed just how much they were willing to make time to watch.
The victory over Paraguay set a major audience record for men’s soccer in the United States, with FOX reporting that nearly 16 million viewers tuned in to its English-language coverage across FOX, FOX One, and Tubi.
That was almost double the audience for the 2022 World Cup opener against Wales, which averaged 8.31 million viewers on FOX.
Reports suggest this year’s match peaked at around 19 million viewers, while Telemundo also drew millions more across its channel and Peacock. Altogether, the total audience reportedly came in around 25 million as the team delivered one of its most dazzling World Cup performances.
USMNT Players Hope Their Win Captivated America

When fans look back years from now, Friday night may be remembered as the point at which everything changed for the nation’s soccer story.
Even some of the USMNT players are thrilled with their performance and the joy it brought to many of their compatriots.
“I hope they were captivated by what we did today,” U.S. player Weston McKennie said, per GOAL. “I think Americans want something exciting, and they want to see action, and they want to see something.”
He added, “I think scoring four goals and just there being five goals in general in a game today, that was something that could captivate them as well as just seeing the joy that we had and the togetherness that we had on the field.”
It remains to be seen if the team can repeat its heroics against Australia on Friday, June 19, but one thing seems certain… they will not be short of support from millions of Americans.
Foreign Fans Marvel At America’s World Cup Stage

Meanwhile, social media has been sent into a frenzy over the perceived magnificence of some of the stadiums being used in the U.S., as well as American culture more broadly.
Many traveling fans from Europe and other parts of the world have been going online to document their experiences in and around the games, with several expressing awe at what they have seen.
From the size of gas stations to the quality and prices of food, to the general culture, some said the experience was unlike anything they had known.
“Atlanta Stadium, nah, this is beauty. I’m sorry Europe can’t compete with America,” an X user wrote in a post.
Someone else wrote about their experience in a viral post, saying, “This is my favorite thing! Lmao the whole world is coming over for the World Cup and experiencing the famous @bucees.”
Americans Celebrate Viral World Cup Praise

The reactions have sparked widespread debate online, as Americans expressed joy at seeing some European visitors praise the country’s quality of life and infrastructure.
Some claimed that foreign fans had been fed “anti-American” propaganda before experiencing the U.S. for themselves.
“Incredible watching all of the Europeans here for the World Cup realize that America is indeed the greatest country in the world,” an X user penned. “The EU bureaucrats sold them a fake image of the US while holding their own nations back.”
Another person wrote, “I work extensively with foreign professionals who relocate here for work. This has been a niche of mine since 2015. Probably worked with people from over 40 countries. Literally nobody ever says that they want to go back to their home country. Yes, the USA is the best!”
