Prince Harry made a surprise virtual appearance at a Nottingham film premiere on Thursday, where he apologized for not attending in person and praised the young filmmakers behind the project.

The Duke of Sussex used the video message to highlight the importance of grassroots organizations and their work in supporting young people facing challenges such as knife crime, peer pressure, and limited opportunities.

Harry continues to champion charities involved in youth-focused initiatives, even as security concerns seemingly remain a key obstacle to his future visits to the UK.

Prince Harry Apologizes For Missing Nottingham Premiere

Audience members and young filmmakers at a local Nottingham screening were left stunned when Prince Harry made a surprise virtual appearance to deliver a heartfelt video message celebrating their work.

According to the BBC, the video was shown just before the premiere of “To Those Who…”, a community-driven film that sheds light on the difficult realities of growing up in the inner city amid knife crime and peer pressure.

In the video statement, Harry expressed his regret at not being able to attend the event in person but praised the film’s creators, saying it was proof of the “creativity and talent that exists among Nottingham’s young people.”

The project was produced by a collaborative group of local organizations, several of which Harry has personally supported for more than a decade.

Take 1 Studios, an organization that specializes in “engaging hard-to-reach young people through a range of creative activities,” noted that the project explores how limited opportunities, poverty, and loyalty to friends can shape ambition, discipline, and the desire for a better future.

The film has been developed as an educational resource and will be shown in schools, youth services, and community settings. Speaking about its central message, Harry encouraged young people facing similar challenges, emphasizing that their voices and futures matter.

“‘To Those Who…’ tells a story that for many of you may feel painfully close to home,” he said. “It shows how quickly choices can narrow under pressure and how easily potential can be lost when young people are left without the support they deserve.”

“But tonight is not just about the challenges, it’s about potential, community, and what becomes possible when young people are seen, heard, and believed in,” Harry added. “To every young person here tonight, your story, your voice, and your future matter.”

“To Those Who…” was funded by Take 1 Studios and developed in partnership with Nottinghamshire Police, Community Recording Studio (CRS), The Pheasants at Radford Football Club, and Broadway Cinema Nottingham.

In his video message, Harry said the film demonstrated why grassroots organizations “matter so deeply,” particularly in a city like Nottingham.

“Our vision isn’t just to rebuild a roof, it’s to create a state-of-the-art long-term space where young people can create, connect, and thrive for generations to come,” he said. “We’re making progress, but no single organization can solve these challenges alone.”

The father of two also called on local organizations, businesses, funders, and community leaders to support the project and “back the young people leading this work.”

Why Nottingham Holds A Special Place For Harry

Harry’s connection to Nottingham and its youth development programs dates back to his time as a working royal, even before he met Meghan. It was also the city where he introduced his then-future wife to everyday Britons during their first official joint royal engagement in December 2017.

Even after stepping back from royal duties and relocating to California, where he and Meghan are raising their family, Harry has continued supporting initiatives aimed at steering young people away from violence and gang culture.

Last year, he donated $1.5 million to BBC Children in Need, with Community Recording Studio (CRS) benefiting significantly from efforts to rebuild its community studio in partnership with Epic Partners.

During a visit to the city in late 2025, Harry met with social action groups and local charities at CRS, where he reflected on his years of involvement in the community.

“For nearly 15 years, I’ve been working alongside communities to tackle violence impacting young people — particularly knife crime, which remains one of the most urgent issues facing this country. During all that time, Nottingham has been a place where I’ve heard harrowing stories, learned important lessons, seen resilience, and felt truly inspired,” he said, per PEOPLE.

Harry is expected to travel to the UK in July for an Invictus Games event marking the countdown to the 2027 competition. Reports have also fueled speculation about a possible reunion with his estranged father, King Charles III, who is said to miss his grandchildren, Archie and Lilibet.

While Harry is reportedly eager to bring Meghan and their children with him, sources told Page Six that there are currently no “firm plans” because of ongoing security concerns.

The Duke is required to provide at least 28 to 30 days’ notice to the UK Home Office’s Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (RAVEC) before visiting the country, meaning those issues could potentially be addressed before the trip.

Meanwhile, an insider told the outlet there is “no chance” of Harry meeting with his estranged brother, Prince William.
