As of June 11, Elon Musk is set to become a trillionaire due to the record-breaking price of SpaceX’s IPO. On Thursday, SpaceX priced its IPO at $135 per share, implying a $1.8 trillion market cap for the company. This would significantly boost Elon Musk’s net worth, making the richest man on the planet that much richer.

According to calculations performed by Forbes, the record-breaking SpaceX IPO price boosted Musk’s net worth by $188 billion. This would make his total net worth an estimated $982 billion. If SpaceX’s stock price climbs to $138.50 per share when trading starts on Friday, and Tesla’s stock price remains unchanged, Musk will become the first trillionaire in world history.

There are actually several ways that Musk could become a trillionaire by the end of the week. If Tesla’s stock rises from $399 to $424 per share, and SpaceX’s share price stays at $135, he would also become a trillionaire. However, this is less likely to happen because the SpaceX IPO is heavily oversubscribed.

Musk currently serves as chairman, CEO, and chief technical officer of SpaceX. He currently owns 4.8 billion shares, which are worth $644 billion, according to Forbes. The publication reports that he also has an additional 350 million stock options with an exercise price of $8.40 per share, which are worth $44 billion. This gives him a 38% stake in the company, valued at approximately $688 billion at the IPO price.

Musk also owns just over 10% of Tesla, which has a $1.5 trillion market cap, worth approximately $165 billion. He also has the option to acquire an additional 8% stake, valued at around $114 billion. However, that’s not all. He also has stakes in the startup Neuralink and his firm Boring Company, which also boosts his net worth.

In May 2025, the BBC reported that Musk left the Trump administration and the Department of Government Efficiency, which faced legal challenges over his work. Musk and his team had been heavily criticized for their lack of transparency and for failing to achieve the savings goals they had previously announced.

Despite its name, DOGE was never an official government department, which could only have ever been established by an act of Congress. The advisory board was created through an executive order signed by U.S. President Donald Trump. Although many staff members had technical backgrounds, many seemingly had little to no experience working in government.

Although Musk had originally said he was volunteering for the position, the White House later confirmed that he had been serving as a government employee, albeit without pay. Initially, Musk said he hoped to save the government $2 trillion a year, but he did not come anywhere near that amount before he left his position.

In February 2025, a poll conducted by CBS News suggested that a majority of Americans supported DOGE’s work. David Ditch, a senior analyst at the Economic Policy Innovation Center, was vocal about his support for DOGE, asking:

“They’re shining a very bright spotlight on various parts of the federal government, and they’re asking – whether it’s the American public, whether it’s moderate members of the Republican caucus – is this how you want America’s tax dollars to be used?”
