Johnson scheduled an ultrasound a day after the new “Jumanji” film promotion, after putting on his best smile for the cameras. “I had to live with that for those twenty-four hours, not knowing – and I had to be on all day, joking around, making speeches,” he recalled.

Fans weren’t the only ones in the dark about Johnson’s cancer scare, as he did not tell his wife of seven years, Lauren Hashian. “I didn’t want to worry her before I knew if it was anything to even worry about,” Johnson explained.

Fortunately, the ultrasound confirmed Johnson did not have testicular cancer. He declared he was okay, reiterating that the time he spent not knowing had been quite emotionally draining as the lump “was really painful.”

Johnson proved his abilities as an actor aren’t for show during a promotional event for the movie in April. He explained in a new interview that behind his smile and carefree facade on that day was a man terrified of what was happening within his body.

The health scare began when Johnson noticed a painful mass on his left testicle while taking a shower. He discovered the lump just days before the promotional event and immediately scheduled an appointment with his doctor.

The medical practitioner examined the lump and concluded it could be testicular cancer or epididymitis, an inflammation of the tube at the back of the testicle that stores and carries sperm. The next step was to get an ultrasound, but Johnson told Esquire he couldn’t get one immediately due to the promotional event.

Johnson’s health scare isn’t the first time he has opened up about his personal life. In 2018, the “Fast & Furious” star shared his hidden mental health battle with Express, revealing that he had been in a very bad place. In Johnson’s words:

“Struggle and pain is real. I was devastated and depressed. I reached a point where I didn’t want to do a thing or go anywhere. I was crying constantly.”

Johnson’s first encounter with depression occurred when he was 15. He watched his mother break down from a series of problems and attempt to end her life months after they were evicted from their apartment. Johnson recalled pulling her back to safety after she walked into oncoming traffic.

After witnessing what his mother experienced, Johnson kept a tighter rein on his emotions, but life kept throwing him curveballs. He suffered many setbacks, including numerous injuries that shattered his NFL dream and a heart-wrenching breakup.

Johnson claimed that he could have become suicidal like his mom if he had not found the inner strength to move on. The Rock noted that he had since healed and was focused on helping others in similar situations by ensuring they knew they were not alone.

His words sparked an outpouring of love and support across social media platforms like X, with Johnson expressing gratitude in a post. He thanked everyone for their kind words, sharing that it took him a long time to understand that “sludge/sh-t and depression never discriminates.”

In his post, Johnson highlighted the importance of opening up about mental health struggles. He noted men were prone to keeping their feelings buried and urged them not to be afraid to share, sentiments he echoed in another interview.

While speaking to BBC’s Newsbeat, Johnson confessed that one of the most important things that helped him through multiple episodes of depression was talking to people. He reiterated that it wasn’t healthy for men to hold things in and hoped his past could help others.

As for the wave of love and support his confession sparked, Johnson couldn’t help but gush about how incredible it felt to be appreciated. He described the experience as “overwhelming,” claiming the support started when he helped a fan with depression.
