The news naturally broke the family, with Savannah Guthrie stepping back from her broadcasting roles. She eventually returned to her co-anchor spot on the NBC News morning show, “Today,” on April 6.

Savannah poured her heart out while guest-hosting “Today with Jenna & Sheinelle” with her best pal, Jenna Bush Hager. She opened up about the challenges she has endured returning to work amid Nancy’s disappearance, breaking down in tears, as she shared her story.

The heartbroken co-anchor explained that the hardest part about returning to work was seeing her best friend because she knew Jenna could always notice the pain hidden behind her eyes. “First of all, I can’t really even look at you every day without crying,” Savannah said through sobs, adding:

“You are my best friend. You know, it’s really hard to come back. I’ve been trying so hard to hold it together, and I promise I will.”

Savannah’s tearful confessions continued, explaining that sometimes working amid her mom’s disappearance was “almost too much” for her to handle. “I feel like to do the job I gotta keep it together, pull it together,” Savannah shared, noting she did not regret returning to work.

According to the media personality, the time she spent on air offered her a “little respite” from her thoughts about Nancy. Savannah stressed that working with her pals did bring her a lot of joy amid their continued support, “but, no, it’s not easy” dealing with her mom’s disappearance.

Savannah also had a message for those wondering how she could work despite Nancy’s missing status, saying, “It’s always with me. I cry every morning on the way to work, and I cry every morning on the way home.” She added that she had never once forgotten about her mom.

A clip from Savannah’s guest host appearance was shared on Instagram, capturing the moment Jenna praised her resilience. Savannah responded with a famous scripture that said, “You’ll walk and not grow faint,” noting that was how she tried to live daily.

Savannah thanked God for giving her the strength to push forward amid her pain, adding that she always advised those in similar situations, including her two kids, to stay strong. “I try to tell my kids that too. We can hold our sadness, and we can hold our joy. And if you don’t believe it, just watch me,” she said.

The longtime NBC News worker reiterated that she could not have handled the pain without her fantastic, supportive community, particularly those at work. Savannah claimed that if it were any other job, she wouldn’t have returned amid Nancy’s disappearance.

According to PEOPLE, Savannah took to her Instagram Story on Sunday, June 7, with a post about Nancy. She shared a painting depicting the ascension of Jesus Christ alongside the message, “Oh my, my soul it cries out, soul, it cries out.”

“Bring her home,” Savannah added below the painting alongside a yellow heart emoji. As stated, the search for Nancy began in February after she was reportedly abducted from her home in Tucson, Arizona, by a masked man.

Authorities have yet to identify a suspect in the case; however, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos shared an update on May 12. He stressed that his department, along with the FBI and other labs, was “working hard to get this resolved.”
