Gwyneth Paltrow is setting the record straight on where she stands politically, after revealing even her husband once misunderstood her views. During a candid conversation, the Oscar winner opened up about today’s political climate and admitted her husband, Brad Falchuk, once assumed she leaned Republican. While discussing the increasingly tense atmosphere in America with Trae Stephens, Gwyneth Paltrow reflected on how difficult it has become to have meaningful conversations.

On Tuesday’s episode of “The Goop Podcast,” the “Iron Man” actress described the current state of the country as “supercharged,” prompting Stephens to respond, “Without that sort of open, respectful dialogue, I’m not sure we can fix any of these problems that we’re seeing in the country.”

Gwyneth Paltrow agreed, explaining that political disagreements have surfaced even within her own marriage. “And he’s so progressive. Like he has such a sweetheart and he wants to, like, make sure everybody’s looked after. And I think in this climate, sometimes I’m like, ‘Can you just listen to this?’” she said of Falchuk, whom she married in 2018.

The “Avengers” actress added that politics in the United States have “become so binary” and said she’s trying to approach conversations differently. “And I am trying to, in my journey through being an American right now, trying to, I don’t know,” she said. “I guess sort of weave together lots of different points of view, and also to get out of that place of, like, righteousness and anger and fear.”

At one point during the discussion, Gwyneth Paltrow revealed that Falchuk once believed she was a Republican, before she clarified her actual political views. The “Marty Supreme” actress described herself as “pretty centrist” but made clear she does not identify as a Republican. “I don’t feel anything right now to be totally honest with you,” she said. “I feel like I’m completely an independent.”

The “Shallow Hal” actress also shared a recent experience attending a concert in Nashville with Falchuk, recalling how watching someone with different political views perform shifted her perspective. “And I just thought, no, but this is so beautiful to see somebody who clearly is such a good person coming from such a different place,” she explained.

This is not the first time Gwyneth Paltrow has spoken publicly about politics. In a previous interview with Vanity Fair, the actress referred to herself as an “independent thinker” while discussing the state of healthcare in the U.S. and the Make America Healthy Again movement associated with Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Rather than backing a specific political figure, Paltrow said she prefers to research issues herself. “Look, we’re all incredibly flawed,” the “Iron Man” actress said. “I think the leaders’ piece is what makes people think, I’m going to take this research into my own hands and I’m going to try to make the best choices that I can for me and my family.”

“A lot of those leaders are, well, they’re all humans, so they’re all imperfect,” she continued. “And sometimes they’re way past imperfect, and it’s actually really dissonant with how other people hold information or how they feel politicians are supposed to behave.”

Gwyneth Paltrow also admitted the country’s political climate has often left her overwhelmed.

“I’ve felt like I’m gripping the sides of my chair,” she shared. “What is the way through all of this and what is actually meant to be incendiary and what is actually meant to be policy?”

Despite their differing viewpoints at times, Gwyneth Paltrow has frequently spoken positively about Falchuk. While accepting the Sherry Lansing Leadership Award at The Hollywood Reporter’s Women in Entertainment gala in December, the “Marty Supreme” actress described him as “the most feminist” man she knows.

“Before I go, I just want to say a good thank you to my manager, my husband, Brad Falchuk, who’s the most feminist man I know, the most loving, who lets me be with myself every day,” she said.

As political conversations continue to divide Americans, Paltrow made it clear she’s trying to approach differing viewpoints with more openness than outrage.
