Barry Manilow‘s road to healing comes with a curve he is not pleased with.

The singer admitted that discovering his powerhouse vocals were gone after his successful stage-one cancer surgery displeased him in a way, and also left him with gratitude.

Barry Manilow’s first stadium show is slated for June 25, while his next Las Vegas residency dates have been set aside for July. The singer had earlier survived a battle with throat cancer and credits his recent diagnosis to early detection.

The singer broke down the emotional reality behind his recovery from the surgery for lung cancer during his interview with ABC News’ Chris Connelly. He revealed that the procedure, which required them to remove his left lung, has affected his ability to perform.

The singer continued that returning to doing what he loves was one of the most difficult parts, as he got a rude shock during his first soundcheck that his voice no longer felt familiar, in his words:

“My voice, I don’t know whether it’s coming back.”

He confessed that this realization left him conflicted as to whether he should continue singing, adding, “That is really upsetting. Because I don’t want it to stop.”

Manilow stressed that the whole experience, however painful, made him realize that he never truly appreciated the richness and power of his voice until he feared losing it now. As shared by ABC News, these days, the singer noted that he values it differently because it no longer responds the same.

Manilow updated the public about his lung cancer in December 2025 via his website. He explained that doctors ordered additional testing following a six-week battle with bronchitis, and this led them straight to a strange spot on his lung.

Manilow opened up about the devastating realization he had to deal with alongside a sense of urgency from the doctors about the need for immediate surgery. Fortunately, he did not require chemotherapy or radiation as the medic later confirmed it was an early-stage tumor, followed by a successful procedure.

Recovery was more difficult than anticipated when he was hospitalized for pneumonia and then admitted to intensive care. The singer admitted that there were times when he wondered if he would survive, but credited his medical team for getting him through.

He said he was treated by doctors and nurses who are “extraordinary” and that he still feels moved by them when he thinks about it. Now approaching his 83rd birthday on June 17, Manilow said the experience has led him to reflect deeply on his life and legacy.

He finds himself asking whether he achieved what he set out to do and whether his music made people happy. One thing that deeply touched him, he said, was the overwhelming support he received from fans around the world, which reminded him of the impact his music has had across generations.

The Blast shared that Manilow gave fans the situation report on his recovery alongside the advice he got from the doctor to help him achieve a successful return to the stage.

The singer, via his social media account, reassured his supporters that his recovery is progressing well and he has been staying active while slowly easing back into doing what he loves.

He revealed that he has been staying physically active and spending time working in the studio, describing the experience as uplifting during his healing process. Manilow also said he will stay in Vegas longer than initially planned due to medical advice to focus on recovery rather than rush back to work.

Doctors advised that the singer delay his residency dates at Westgate Las Vegas from Feb. 12 to 21 to give him more time to recover, and he agreed to their advice as he is expected to be fully fit for his upcoming tour. He concluded the update by saying he had taken additional time off to rest and prepare in order to return strong.

The singer has not exactly had the best last six years when it comes to his health. The Blast noted that in 2020, he faced an unexpected pause that disrupted his artistic journey.

Perhaps the most important aspect of Manilow’s journey was the fact that it brought to the fore the importance of regular health checks and early detection. Manilow had shared that doctors picked up the signs in his voice during a routine medical examination, and the precautionary evaluation eventually led to the discovery of throat cancer.

He admitted that the discovery took him aback; however, his resolve to overcome it was stronger, and his environment also encouraged keeping the positive energy amid the chaos of treatment and recovery.

Two years before this episode, Manilow was hospitalized with a bronchial infection shortly after he launched his residency performances at Westgate Las Vegas. In 2017, the singer was also advised to hold off from performing after suffering strained vocal cords, forcing him to delay several scheduled shows.

Even earlier, in 2016, the music icon was hospitalized in Los Angeles after experiencing complications following emergency oral surgery during his “One Last Time–One Last Tour.”

Not long after Manilow updated fans about his health and treatment plans last year, he revealed that his surgeries would occupy the entire month of January, which meant he must postpone all performances scheduled for that month.

Despite the setback, Manilow expressed optimism towards a possible return in February 2026, just in time for his planned Valentine’s weekend shows. In his message to fans, Manilow declared that he was eagerly anticipating getting back to what he considers his second home in Westgate, Las Vegas.

He also expressed his anticipation of reconnecting with audiences during the Valentine’s weekend concerts and future performances throughout 2026. The singer reassured his fans that the upcoming shows would make the wait worthwhile and encouraged them to remain positive as he focused on overcoming his health challenges.

However, those plans were merely tentative as Manilow’s doctors advised him to extend his recovery period by an additional two weeks, leading to an unavoidable postponement.

Wishing Barry Manilow the quickest of recoveries!
