Usha Vance Says Her Legal Career Is Not Over

Usha says she has not closed the door on her legal career after stepping away from her role at Munger, Tolles & Olson in 2024 to focus on her family.

Speaking to ABC News Live Prime on June 1, the second lady revealed she has put her legal licenses on hold for now, but she expects “the time will come again” for her to practice law. She admitted she does not yet know what that return might look like, noting that she is still exploring how to use her legal background in areas she cares about.

Usha also said she has not closely followed recent Supreme Court criticism since leaving daily legal work. Her next chapter may connect to her work on childhood literacy, including her podcast, “Storytime with the Second Lady.”

JD Vance Recalls Being ‘Obsessed’ With Usha

JD shares several personal details in his new memoir, including a surprising confession about Usha.

In the upcoming book, “Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith,” the vice president recalled telling a friend he was “obsessed” with the Girl Scouts troop leader after meeting her in a small group at Yale.

JD wrote that he was struck by how she could be both “intensely competitive” and “incapable of jealousy,” a combination he believed came from a “supreme inner confidence.”

What stood out most, however, was that Usha seemed uninterested in the “traditional marks of success” and simply wanted to do “interesting work.”

“The least impressive person at this school is the most ambitious. But the most impressive just wants to have a family and a decent job,” JD recalled telling his friend at the time.

JD Says He Knew He Would Marry Usha

Usha’s unusual yet admirable traits only deepened Vance’s attraction to her, with the politician admitting in the book that he was “drawn to her unlike I had ever been drawn to anyone.”

After his relationship with an ex named Mary ended, Usha became the only person he could imagine being with. He also believed it was either a future with her or a life of remaining single.

“I will marry this girl,” JD recalls confessing to his friends. “Or I will be a lifelong bachelor.”

For JD, the usual rules of “playing hard to get” quickly disappeared. He claims he admitted to Usha that he was in love with her before they had officially started dating.

Once their relationship began, JD said he wasted little time in making her his lifelong partner.

“We had been together only a few weeks when I told her I wanted to marry her and would do whatever I needed to do to make that happen,” he noted.

JD Credits Usha Vance In His Faith Journey

JD’s new book largely centers on his conversion to Catholicism after a Protestant upbringing and a period in which he identified as an atheist.

According to USA Today, the vice president acknowledged that Usha played a major role in helping him reach that point in his life. He also used the moment to acknowledge her role as the mother of their children.

“A critical part of that journey was falling in love with a girl who would eventually become a mother four times over,” JD said, before extending best wishes to other moms in general.

“All moms — all families — have their own stories, with a mix of ups and downs. To all the moms reading this, I hope your stories have included more good days than bad,” he added.

JD And Usha Vance Have Faced Marriage Rumors

Despite the image of JD as deeply devoted to Usha in his book, their marriage has faced significant scrutiny in recent times.

On several occasions, Usha has been seen in public without her wedding ring, prompting some observers to question whether a divorce was in the works.

The politician was also seen sharing a close hug with Erika Kirk at a Turning Point USA event in October. The moment further fueled speculation about potential trouble in the vice president’s marriage.

Addressing the rumors in December, however, JD told NBC News that his relationship with Usha remains “as strong as it has ever been.”
