Davis got hospitalized on Friday, May 28, in the evening. He was admitted to a New York City hospital, and the health scare has to do with his respiratory system.

The record producer is reportedly suffering from an upper respiratory infection and was taken to the hospital as an extra step of caution.

He seems to be doing fine and recovering smoothly, as his spokesperson told TMZ that he is expected to be released in the next 24 hours.

Davis is an age-old name in the music industry. He is credited with molding the careers of iconic singers like Kelly Clarkson, Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, and many more.

He also founded Bad Boy Records with Sean “Diddy” Combs and has worked with stars like Billy Joel, Barry Manilow, and Janis Joplin through the course of his career.

The 94-year-old music executive was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000 in the non-performers category. He has his name in lights as the 200-seat theater at the Grammy Museum is named after him.

Davis is a prominent figure in the entertainment space, and his record speaks for itself. He was the former President of Columbia Records and is the chief creative officer of Sony Music Entertainment.

The Daily Mail reported that he became General Counsel of Columbia Records in the early 60s, was appointed Vice President and General Manager in 1966, and became President the following year, during which he pursued his interest in rock and folk music.

Over the years, Davis has signed many artists, bands, music groups, and record labels. He strongly believes that “music is a necessary ingredient in people’s lives.”

Just last week, Davis was seen at the Gordon Parks Foundation Awards Dinner and Auction in NYC. He was among the celebrity guests who appeared during the special evening, along with Alicia Keys.

During the event, the pair were seen sitting next to each other at a table alongside Chance the Rapper and Swizz Beatz.

Davis and Keys’ relationship goes way back to the 90s. After he left Columbia, the Harvard Law graduate launched Arista Records in 1974, which is now owned by Sony Music Entertainment. Under Arista, he signed Keys, Westlife, Kenny G, and Bay City Rollers, among others.

In 2000, Davis left Arista to form J Records, which still had an artist roster that included Keys, along with Busta Rhymes, Jamie Foxx, Maroon 5, Annie Lennox, Jennifer Hudson, Kesha, Rod Stewart, and Pearl Jam.

The record producer and the “Girl on Fire” singer have built a relationship beyond the professional space. He recently spent time with her and her sons when they visited him in Miami.

In 2021, Davis was diagnosed with Bell’s Palsy, as previously stated. According to Mayo Clinic, it is a condition that causes sudden weakness of the muscles on one side of the face. Although the weakness is short-term and improves over weeks, the effects are visible on one side of the face.

After receiving the diagnosis,  Davis decided to postpone the second half of his annual pre-Grammy party from February to May. “He is being treated with antibiotics and steroids and is expected to recover within six to eight weeks,” his rep revealed at the time.

Wkyc studios reported that the record producer received his diagnosis in good spirits and was looking forward to the party in the coming months. That was not the first delay his gala plans faced that year, as they were also affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

Davis has been throwing the unforgettable party the night before the Grammys since 1976. The gala is famous for its surprise performances and star-studded guest list.

Speaking about his arrangements for the 2024 event, The Blast reported that Davis said it’s sometimes hard to accommodate everyone who wishes to attend due to logistical constraints

He shared that the maximum number of attendees that year was 950 due to the production facilities. While keeping his guest list in check, the music executive noted that he does not exclude significant names in the industry.

“It is difficult because in order to arrange, in order to accommodate some of the newer major players that have got to be there in the world of streaming and social media,” Davis said, before noting that instead of turning down famous musicians, he’d rather they attend but without a plus one.
