King Charles broke royal protocol as he hugged and kissed a woman during a recent visit to York Hospital’s Macmillan Cancer Centre.

Charles, who has himself battled an undisclosed form of cancer, also opened up to a patient undergoing treatment as they bonded over their shared health experiences.

The emotional moment comes months after the monarch shared the good news that his cancer treatment would be reduced in 2026, while appearing to carefully avoid the word “remission.”

King Charles Shares Rare Public Display Of Affection With Cancer Patient

Charles appeared so moved during his visit to a refurbished cancer center that royal protocol took a back seat.

On Tuesday, May 26, His Majesty visited the Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Cancer Centre at York Hospital, where he met with staff, patients, and those involved in the center’s redevelopment.

In a video shared by royal editor Rebecca English, Charles was seen giving a woman a warm hug before kissing her twice on both cheeks. The gesture appeared to delight those nearby, who watched the sweet exchange with smiles.

Charles also gave another man a firm handshake, suggesting that the era of a monarch keeping a strict physical distance during public engagements may be softening under his reign.

During the visit, Charles also spoke about the importance of having open conversations about cancer.

He made the remarks while speaking with stage 4 breast cancer patient Louise Rhodes, who served as a patient representative during the rehabilitation of the center.

Rhodes reportedly told the King that her father died from cancer in 2024, prompting Charles to respond, “It’s everywhere. It’s so important to be able to talk.”

The monarch then praised Macmillan Cancer Support, a charity he has served as patron of since 1997.

“They are amazing, and I’m delighted to have been a patron for a very long time,” he said.

Rhodes later told the BBC that meeting Charles was an “honor of a lifetime,” adding that they were able to “connect straight away.”

King Charles’ Cancer Treatment Has Been Reduced

Charles was diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer in February 2024 and temporarily stepped back from public-facing duties to focus on his recovery.

The monarch has largely kept the details of his condition private, but he has made rare comments about his health on a few occasions.

Back in December 2025, he shared a hopeful update, revealing that his treatment would be “reduced” in 2026, per People. “Today I am able to share with you the good news that thanks to early diagnosis, effective intervention and adherence to ‘doctors’ orders,’ my own schedule of cancer treatment can be reduced in the New Year,” he said at the time.

Amid his health journey, Charles is reportedly determined not to let the long-running rift between his sons continue unchecked.

The King is said to be willing to forgive Prince Harry and would also like to see him reconcile with Prince William, as the estrangement between the brothers has allegedly become a deep source of pain for him.

Harry and William have not been on good terms for years, especially after the Duke of Sussex made several damaging allegations about the family following his decision to step back from royal duties in 2020.

Reports suggest the Prince of Wales still sees Harry as “totally untrustworthy” and remains reluctant to extend an olive branch.

Charles has reportedly turned to his new aide, Theo Rycroft, to help bring his sons back together.

Rycroft only recently joined the royal household, but he is said to have already earned the King’s trust. He has also been described as a calm operator with experience handling sensitive situations.

Reports suggest Rycroft hopes to make the first move when Harry travels to the U.K. later this summer for an Invictus Games event. The plan would reportedly begin with a meeting between Harry and Charles before any effort is made to encourage William to join.

Sources told the Daily Mail that the aide believes the situation is “f-cking ridiculous” and is determined to resolve the issue “urgently” for Charles’ sake.

“He thinks it’s time to knock their heads together,” an insider said. “Theo’s a very reasonable guy and incredibly nice, and he completely gets that this is a source of great pain to the King and wants to help him resolve it. He sees his job as helping the King resolve it.”
