Kevin Hart is giving his two cents on the controversial George Floyd joke at his Netflix Roast that has caught media attention.

The joke, which did not sit right with many, was made by Tony Hinchcliffe during his set at the 2026 “Netflix Is A Joke” festival. Following the televised event, many netizens, industry personalities, and family members of the truck driver who was murdered in a case of racial injustice and police brutality began to call out the comedian.

Waves that the Kevin Hart Roast on Netflix went too far have been rising, with fingers pointing at the comedian for not springing into immediate action over the insensitive joke.

As the heat continues rising over Hinchcliffe’s controversial punchline, Hart wants people to quit dragging him into the drama.

Hinchcliffe made a joke using Floyd’s name, whilst roasting fellow comedian Hart at the Netflix event, and many have tagged the comedian a racist.

Other comics, as well as family members of the late Floyd, began dragging him over the tasteless joke, along with his remarks about lynching Hart and the suicide of comedian Sheryl Underwood’s late husband.

Hart’s stance is that those who are coming at him are out of line, as he did not say the words that ignited the controversy.

He also defended his fellow comedian, stressing that Hinchcliffe, as he knows him, is not a racist. According to TMZ, Hart said he was fine with the Floyd line in the context of a roast.

Tony Hinchcliffe Is Getting Heat From Several Angles

Floyd’s family has blasted the comedian duo, expressing their distaste, especially because Hinchcliffe used the late truck driver’s name in his roasts about Hart and again during Tom Brady’s roast segment.

Floyd’s brother expressed that he was disappointed Hart did not have a visible reaction to the joke, but let it slide over.

Chelsea Handler, who was also a part of Hart’s roast, was one of the most prominent voices to call the comedian out for the joke.

Handler also included the event’s emcee, Shane Gillis, in the drag, tagging them as racist, and saying that they ruined the night.

Hart, amid defending himself and Hinchcliffe, stressed that he would not tell such jokes because he knows the reactions that would follow.

However, he said that he understood why Hinchcliffe went there, further justifying that going over the line is the point of a roast.

He also revealed he even spoke to Floyd’s pal Stephen Jackson after the roast to discuss Hinchliffe’s joke, but did not say how Jackson reacted.

What Did Hinchcliffe Say During The Roast?

During the roast, Hinchcliffe had joked, “The Black community is so proud of you,” addressing Hart before adding, “right now George Floyd is looking at us all and laughing so hard that he can’t breathe.”

He went on joking about Hart’s height, saying, “Kevin’s so short they’re going to have to lynch him from a bonsai tree.”

Hinchcliffe also took a jab at fellow comedian, Underwood’s late husband, who passed away by suicide after battling with depression in 1990.

“Her husband committed suicide three years into the marriage. I’ve been sitting next to her for two hours, and I have to ask: how did he last that long?” he said, which sparked a laugh from Underwood.

The Blast reported that although she was seen laughing in the audience, she admitted that the material struck her as “in poor taste” and highlighted that people should be upset at Hinchcliffe’s jokes.

Underwood revealed that she was informed ahead of the show, respectfully, by Hinchcliffe and Shane Gillis that jokes were going to roll out about her.

She also claimed she warned the comedian after she heard the Floyd joke. “I told Tony Hinchcliffe personally, ‘You gotta deal with the Floyd family — and they got hands.’ You’re talking about someone’s relative,” Underwood said.

George Floyd’s Brother Wanted An Immediate Energy Shift At The Event

Terrence Floyd broke his silence about Hart’s nearly three-hour-long Netflix roast, expressing his grievances against Hinchcliffe for dragging his deceased brother’s name on stage, but also aired disappointment at Hart’s reaction.

He shared his thoughts on controversial drama during a virtual appearance on “The Latest with Loren LoRosa,” where he called out the roast’s showrunners and Hart.

Terrence noted that he did not watch the roast live but heard the comments later and was stunned by Hart’s laidback reaction to the offensive joke.

The Blast shared that, according to Terrence, Hart should have reacted the way Will Smith did at the 2022 Academy Awards, where he slapped Chris Rock for making a joke about his wife’s alopecia.

He said the actor “should have had, not the Will Smith action, but the Will Smith energy, where you stand up and do it.”

In case you did not know, George Floyd was murdered by a police officer in Minneapolis on May, 25, 2020. The officer, Derek Chauvin, knelt on his neck and back until he asphyxiated him; his death ignited protests against police brutality.

Handler reacted to the jokes made at the “Netflix Is A Joke” fest and did not mince words, expressing her thoughts. During her recent appearance on Deon Cole’s “Funny Knowing You” podcast, she had a lot to say about the event, tagging the vibes “gross.”

She took it a step further, talking about Hinchcliffe and Gillis from a personal life standpoint, as she claimed she realized the men were “pretty bad” after receiving info from their ex-partners.

When asked to shed more light on that, she said, “It’s just everything we know. That they’re racist, that they’re bigots, they’re sexist. That they think they are like, invincible.”

As reported by The Blast, Handler also pointed out that the lynching joke about Hart did not sit right with her either.

She expressed that “Lynching Black people is not a joke. It’s worse than rape.” She added that the jokes gave her the ick, including the ones targeted at Underwood about her late husband’s death.

Will Kevin Hart’s stance spark a change in the controversy?
