Hathaway is sharing a very personal health challenge that she went through for years without anyone knowing, as she was once legally blind in one eye due to an early-onset cataract.

During her appearance on Popcast, the Oscar-winning actress revealed that the ailment had a tremendous impact on her ability to see for nearly 10 years until she finally had surgery.

A cataract, as explained by the Cleveland Clinic, is described as a cloudy area that forms on the eye lens, and age-related cataracts are often the most common type.

Hathaway admitted that she did not catch on early that her vision had suffered such extensive damage until after the procedure had restored it.

The actress also thanked modern medicine, pointing out that a few generations ago, her surgery to save her eyesight might not have been possible for someone in her situation.

Hathaway declared on the New York Times show Popcast in April that the experience completely changed the way she views everyday life, adding that being able to wake up and see clearly now feels “like a miracle.”

As stated by The Blast, Hathaway finally addressed the facelift speculation saga, including years of endless rumors about her appearance. While she affirmed in her Elle interview that she had no intention to speak on the unending gossip, it had become a nauseating voice in her ear.

Hathaway established that it would be unsafe to have people become super comfortable presenting assumptions as facts, even when they are far from being accurate. Much of the buzz on the internet was spurred by fans noticing slight shifts in her appearance, which she admits were mostly due to simple beauty hacks such as braiding her hair and a lip-plumping technique she actually shared herself.

Hathaway stressed that a facelift is a serious medical procedure and found it surprising that people jumped to such an extreme conclusion over something as minor as “two braids.”

However, the actress did not entirely dismiss the idea of some surgery down the road, confessing that this time, she would be emotionally ready for the public response in a manner her younger self could not.

Hathaway said she now feels “nauseous” to think of how she was so afraid and self-critical at an earlier point in her career when she was getting criticized so much.

The actress revealed what turning 40 meant for her, stating that she has embraced a more joyful version of herself with a new perspective on the way she views herself, beauty, and success.

Hathaway noted how her understanding of beauty has also gone through various creative shifts over the years. The actress recalled advice given to her by a fellow Hollywood actor who lectured her that beauty does not have to be grand, as long as it is rooted in honesty and truth.

Looking back on her early years in the industry,  Hathaway admitted she once believed being overly critical of herself would somehow make her a better actress. But she admitted to gaining more insights about ditching stress and not chasing perfection as a duty in her daily exploits.

Hathaway reiterated that she is instead sticking with the ethos of joy, realness, and surrounding herself with people who can laugh with her through life’s difficult moments.

Behind the actress’s glamorous Hollywood career was another personal struggle she kept off the scene for years.

Independent noted that Hathaway reflected on motherhood during an interview with Vanity Fair, where she confessed that her path to having children was filled with heartbreak, emotional pressure, and moments of silent grief.

During her second pregnancy announcement in 2019, Hathaway chose to be honest about a pressing issue of infertility and conception struggles, which, according to her, would have felt dishonest not to acknowledge.

Hathaway recalled her darkest moment being in 2015 when she battled a miscarriage while starring in an off-Broadway production “Grounded,” which involved her performing a birth scene onstage while managing her loss. The actress stated that everything became an emotional overload as she tried to bury her pain from the audience.

Being honest and public was all the switch Hathaway needed when it came to her perspective, as it helped her discover how many women silently endure miscarriage and infertility struggles.

While Hathaway may be one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, she has confessed in interviews that she often gets her biggest dose of happiness in the most ordinary moments with her husband, Adam Shulman.

Elle shared that Hathaway referenced one of their trips to the grocery store, where they had the most exciting moment during a sale in the organic section, where she discovered that they still love being playful together during everyday errands.

Hathaway and her darling husband first met at the Palm Springs International Film Festival in 2008, and things have waxed stronger since then, with two babies in the mix.

The Oscar winner also touched on the best relationship advice she has ever received, which actually came from her Shulman during an argument.

The actress stated that Shulman once calmly told her he was perfectly fine with her being “right” because he was focused on telling the truth instead. Hathaway admitted that the statement made her realize that arguments should serve the relationship rather than satisfy personal pride.
