Pat McAfee officially welcomed his second child with wife Samantha McAfee after revealing that their son, Midas Robert McAfee, arrived on May 22 at 10:42 p.m.

The former Indianapolis Colts kicker shared the emotional news in a lengthy post on X, where he asked followers to “Please help @MrsMcAfeeShow, Mackenzie, and I welcome Midas Robert McAfee to our family.”

McAfee explained that Samantha’s pregnancy became increasingly dangerous due to severe preeclampsia, forcing doctors to make a sudden medical decision.

“Due to Samantha having a high risk pregnancy and severe preeclampsia, the decision was made to have an emergency C-Section on Friday night,” he wrote.

Despite arriving four weeks early, McAfee proudly described his newborn son as “a 6lb 6oz screaming young legend… 10 Toes, 10 Fingers, full head of hair.”

The couple, who married on August 1, 2020, already share a daughter, Mackenzie Lynn, born in May 2023. However, while McAfee’s message celebrated new life, it also revealed the terrifying hours that followed Midas’ birth.

Shortly after delivery, Pat McAfee said the family briefly experienced the joy of immediate bonding moments before doctors determined Midas needed additional medical attention.

“Literally in his first moments of life, Midas was working,” McAfee explained.

The sports host said his son managed to stabilize enough to spend some precious early moments with his parents.

The TV host revealed, “He was able to get his O2 Levels high enough to be able to come hang with us in our room and because of that we got to do all of the immediate magical newborn moments,” McAfee shared before listing “Skin to skin, 10,000 kisses, tons of love, all of that.”

However, because Midas was born at 36 weeks instead of full term, doctors soon transferred him to the NICU.

McAfee explained that his son needed extra help “to develop his lungs a little bit more, get some fluid out of him, and adjust a bit to life outside of Sam’s stomach.”

The emotional situation became even harder as Samantha recovered from major surgery while their newborn son remained separated from them down the hospital hallway.

“As mom was recovering like a badass from the mind boggling C-Section surgery, little dude was DAHN the hall,” McAfee wrote.

He also revealed doctors placed Midas on “a CPAP,” used “a feeding tube,” and kept him in “a heated pod with a heating lamp.”

“There wasn’t much I could do other than bring positive vibes as I bounced back and forth between the 2,” he admitted.

Throughout the emotional post, McAfee repeatedly praised Samantha for enduring the difficult delivery and recovery.

“Watching Samantha battle thru her recovery has been nothing short of inspiring,” he wrote. “WE APPRECIATE YOU @MrsMcAfeeShow.”

McAfee also promised their children would understand everything their mother sacrificed for them.

“I will be sure that our kids will know how much you went thru for them,” he added.

While Samantha recovered, McAfee said he spent time imagining the future awaiting his son despite the fear surrounding the NICU experience.

“And every time I went and saw boy, I couldn’t help but fantasize about what his life could become,” he shared.

The sports personality admitted seeing his newborn surrounded by medical equipment was difficult.

“We had a sneaky suspicion that he was a dawg and a fighter but, it is a bit scary to see your baby hooked up to so many ‘very serious’ things,” McAfee confessed.

Thankfully, Midas only remained in the NICU for around 36 hours before doctors allowed him back into his parents’ room.

“He ended up staying roughly 36 hours in the NICU before being released back to our room… a FULL CELEBRATION occurred,” McAfee wrote.

Meaning Behind Baby Midas’ Emotional Name

Pat McAfee also opened up about why the couple chose the unique name Midas.

According to the ESPN personality, the name dates back to his freshman year of high school after a teacher introduced him to Greek mythology.

“The name ‘Midas’ has been the name I’d hoped to name my baby boy, if I was to ever have kids, since my Freshman year of high school,” he explained.

McAfee said the original appeal came from the famous mythological story of turning everything into gold.

“Like most, when you come from not a lot, the thought of everything you touch becoming gold was certainly an immediate draw for me,” he wrote.

However, he added that adulthood completely changed how he understood success.

He shared, “In this world that we live in, gold can only come from working your ass off, getting lucky, and having great folks around you.”

McAfee explained that he hopes his son grows into someone who helps others.

“He will be an asset to society, he will treat folks right, and he will work his ass off to help his community achieve their own form of ‘gold,’” he added.

The newborn’s middle name also carried deep emotional meaning for the family.

“‘Robert’ is a tribute to Samantha’s dad and best friend,” McAfee explained.

He described Samantha’s late father as “A man that we lost way too soon a couple of years back.”

McAfee promised his son would still grow up connected to his grandfather through stories and family memories.

“Midas will know his grandfather thru our stories and pictures,” he wrote.

The post ended with gratitude, patriotism, and a few humorous touches that reflected McAfee’s personality.

He wrote, “We Love You Midas… Welcome to the McAfee family. We will do everything we can for you, brother.”

McAfee also joked that his newborn had already experienced several major sports moments shortly after birth.

He revealed, “p.s. Midas has already watched the closest Indy 500 of all time. The Vegas Golden Knights HUGE game 3 comeback… AND of course, Top Gun Maverick.”
