It took Rumer Willis attending a wedding to realize there was no light at the end of her relationship tunnel.

The daughter of Hollywood icons Bruce Willis and Demi Moore confirmed her split from ex-boyfriend Derek Richard Thomas in August 2024 after welcoming their daughter about sixteen months prior to their breakup. The timeline of their relationship remains hazy, although they were confirmed to be dating in August 2022.

Rumer Willis has been open about navigating life as a first-time mom and single parent, and while some resonate with her experience, others rain backlash.

Rumer Willis Realized The Romance Was Over While Attending A Wedding

Willis is wearing her heart on her sleeve, detailing why the relationship with her daughter’s father ended shortly after they became a family of three.

She shared the tea while appearing on a recent episode of “The Inside Edit” podcast with her best friend, stylist Maeve Reilly.

While Reilly was tying the knot with her husband, Zach Quittman, in June 2024, Willis was hit with the realization that she did not want to be in a relationship with Thomas anymore and accepted that their romance was over.

“Your wedding literally was a huge reckoning moment for me in my life. I heard your vows, and I just realized that the situation I was in was never going to look like that, no matter how much effort I put in,” she told Reilly on the podcast.

She explained that watching her best friend at the ceremony brought her to tears and stirred up the thought “I need to have more value for myself.”

Willis went on, reiterating her thoughts on the huge reckoning moment and expressing gratitude to Reilly. She revealed that at that time she had to brace up, face her fears, leave the relationship, and find her own beautiful love story.

The Actress Left A ‘Really Challenging Relationship’

As they continued their conversation, she reflected on her romance with Thomas, noting that it took a while for her to “feel back in [her] power” after “a really challenging relationship.”

The mom of one added that walking out of the relationship with her daughter’s father was really brutal and challenging, but she draws strength from her now-three-year-old girl, Louetta.

Willis expressed that she derives happiness from being a mom, and she views motherhood as a privilege. Despite her setback with Thomas, the actress has not lost hope in finding love once again. She admitted to having stayed out of the dating pool for over a year since her split, but now she is ready to give it another try.

Willis stressed that she is getting back in the game with a different set of standards now. “I’m looking for someone who shows up with consistent communication and is interested in pursuing me and wooing me,” she told Reilly.

In a mental picture for her future, the “Striptease” star sees herself married to a wonderful man next year and building a family with up to eight children.

Who Is Derek Richard Thomas?

Thomas is a musician who goes by his initials DRT in the entertainment space. he was the frontman and lead vocalist of a band called Vista Kicks.

Along with his bandmates, the group released four albums and one EP. In 2023, he announced that the group was taking a break, and Vista Kicks held their final show at The Fonda Theatre in L.A. on February 17, 2023.

He is also a music producer under his record label “In the DRT Records,” and as reported by PEOPLE, his first project was with a band called The Hail Maries, made up of singer sisters Victoria and Makayla Wymer.

In 2022, Willis performed his song, “How Many Years,” with her then-lover and The Hail Maries at Jam In The Van in Los Angeles.

Thomas also bonded with his ex’s father, Bruce, and sister Scout over music during their relationship. He expressed his excitement to have a baby with the actress on a previous podcast and praised Willis for “growing their baby from scratch.”

When Louetta was born, the musician announced her arrival on Instagram a few days later, writing, “You are pure magic. You are more than we ever dreamed of.” 

Single Parenthood Has Not Been A Breeze For TV Personality

Willis took to social media to lament how difficult being a single mom has been for her. She was brought to tears in that vulnerable moment, revealing that there are days when the going truly gets tough. 

She walked through the woods, wiping the tears from her face as she filmed the raw moment. In the video’s overlay text, she wrote, “Just had a good cry in the woods…some days being a single mom is hard. She is not hard (ever), but some days doing everything alone can be.” 

The Blast reported that Willis also discussed the hot topic of breastfeeding with her fans in a subsequent Q&A session. The actress talked about the health benefits of the natural feeding process, stressing that there was “something so special about it.” 

She explained that while it has been a wonderful experience to nourish her daughter through her body’s nutrients, she may have to stop because of her health.

Willis revealed that her plan to breastfeed Louetta till she turns three may be cut short because her body could not take it anymore, and she had issues with her gut health, which she could not treat because she was still breastfeeding.

Rumer Willis Clapped Back At Nepo-Baby Tag

Earlier this year, Willis made a post voicing the hurdles she faces as a single mother to her daughter. Some internet users criticized the actress with rude comments in at attempt to silence her. 

“Life is easy when you don’t have to work,” a comment read. “She collects a big cheque every month. We are not the same,” another added.

“You may have your own struggles, but money isn’t one of them. You have owned homes over $2,000,000, and your own mother owned multiple properties worth over $50,000,000…” another user wrote under the post. Willis wasted no time clearing the air via her Instagram Stories. 

The Blast reported that she clarified that she does not get financial assistance from her parents or live off a trust fund.  “I work 4 different jobs to provide for my daughter. I am the sole provider for her,” the media personality wrote.

Acknowledging that she had experienced certain privileges in life, she noted that she’s aware that she may “never fully experience” some realities. Still, her post was “not about privilege or comparing circumstances.”
