Spencer Pratt’s surprising Los Angeles mayoral campaign just received praise from one of the most controversial political figures in America, but the reality star appears determined not to let that support define his candidacy.

After President Donald Trump publicly complimented Pratt’s growing campaign momentum this week, the former “Hills” star quickly shifted focus back toward local issues and safety concerns in Los Angeles.

Still, Trump’s remarks have intensified questions about where Pratt truly stands politically as the election race heats up.

Spencer Pratt unexpectedly found himself at the center of national political chatter after Donald Trump commented on his mayoral campaign on Wednesday morning.

While departing Joint Base Andrews for Connecticut, the president was asked whether he saw similarities between himself and Pratt because both built fame through reality television before stepping into politics.

“I’d like to see him do well. He’s a character,” Trump responded per the Daily Mail. He then admitted that he did not personally know Pratt but suggested he believed the reality star supported him politically.

“I heard he does. I heard he’s a big MAGA person,” Trump added after a reporter replied, “I think so.”

Although the president stopped short of formally endorsing Pratt, the remarks immediately fueled speculation that the former president could eventually throw his support behind the TV personality.

The attention arrives as Pratt’s mayoral campaign continues gaining momentum in Los Angeles ahead of the June primary election.

Despite the national spotlight, Pratt has reportedly been cautious about fully embracing Trump publicly because he is campaigning in an overwhelmingly Democratic city.

Even without a formal endorsement, Trump made it clear he has been paying attention to Spencer Pratt’s campaign.

“He’s doing well,” Trump told reporters while discussing the race. The president then pivoted into broader complaints about California elections, claiming the voting system disadvantages Republicans.

“You have a rigged vote out there. If we had Jesus Christ come down and count the votes, I would have won California,” he continued.

Trump also repeated long-standing claims that California’s use of mail-in voting creates dishonest election results. “California is one of the most dishonest states for voting,” Trump said.

Following Donald Trump’s comments, Pratt appeared eager to avoid being boxed into a MAGA identity. Even though he is running as a Republican, the reality star has repeatedly emphasized that he wants voters focused on city issues rather than national political divisions.

“Everybody wants me to succeed because LA is the most important city in the country,” Pratt told TMZ, adding, “The only support I need is from moms that wanna feel safe in Los Angeles. I’m laser-focused on that.”

According to political insiders, Pratt hopes to attract conservative and independent voters frustrated with Los Angeles leadership while avoiding becoming too closely tied to national Republican politics.

That strategy may become harder now that Trump has publicly connected Pratt to MAGA culture. Over the weekend, columnist Rob Shuter reported that Trump had privately considered endorsing the 42-year-old’s campaign.

“Trump loves celebrity candidates, and Spencer knows exactly how to dominate headlines,” one Republican insider claimed, further noting, “The idea of endorsing him has absolutely been discussed.”

Still, insiders say Pratt understands a formal endorsement from Trump could create serious complications in heavily blue Los Angeles.

Rather than leaning into national political battles, Spencer Pratt has tried centering his campaign on frustrations many Angelenos already have with city leadership.

The reality star has repeatedly focused on public safety concerns, homelessness, and quality-of-life issues throughout Los Angeles.

Pratt has also targeted current leadership while portraying himself as an outsider candidate frustrated with the direction of the city.

According to reports, part of his campaign strategy involves presenting himself less as a partisan figure and more as a frustrated local resident trying to force change.

Shuter reported that Pratt was intentionally attempting to “walk a fine line” politically by appealing to conservatives without becoming fully attached to larger Republican movements.

Recently, Pratt sparked fresh drama after erupting at Variety journalist Marlow Stern, who mocked the reality star’s threat to leave Los Angeles if he loses the mayoral race.

As The Blast reported, the backlash began after Pratt told Adam Carolla he would be “done with trying to live in L.A.” if Karen Bass or Nithya Raman won the election, claiming he wanted to raise his children somewhere safer and pursue the “last American dream.”

After the story was shared online, Stern responded by writing that Pratt “lives in Santa Barbara,” referencing reports that the mayoral candidate had been staying with family outside Los Angeles following the 2025 Palisades fire.

Pratt exploded over the comment, replying, “My house burned down. I lost everything. I can’t rebuild,” before accusing journalists of mocking wildfire victims and forcing his family into unsafe conditions.

He added, “God help you if you try to make things right for your community… if you lose your entire town, ‘journalists’ mock you for not making your kids sleep in the toxic dirt on your burned-out lot.”
