The world of “Grey’s Anatomy” is getting even bigger. ABC has officially greenlit a brand-new spinoff of the long-running medical drama, this time taking the franchise far from Seattle and into the heart of Texas. The upcoming series, which is still untitled, is set to premiere during the 2026-2027 broadcast season and will mark the fourth spinoff in the “Grey’s Anatomy” universe.

According to ABC, the new one-hour drama will focus on a medical team working at a rural medical center in West Texas, where resources are limited and help can be miles away. Per the official announcement, the series is described as “an edgy drama about a team at a West Texas rural medical center, the last chance for care before miles of nowhere.”

The show will be co-created and executive-produced by “Grey’s Anatomy” mastermind Shonda Rhimes alongside Meg Marinis, who stepped into the role of “Grey’s Anatomy” showrunner during season 20. Longtime “Grey’s” star and executive producer Ellen Pompeo will also serve as an executive producer on the new series.

While fans are already wondering whether familiar faces could pop up in Texas, ABC has not yet confirmed how closely connected the new show will be to “Grey’s Anatomy.”

It also remains unclear whether Pompeo’s iconic character, Meredith Grey, or any other fan-favorite doctors from Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital will make appearances. Still, with Pompeo attached behind the scenes and Rhimes heavily involved, fans are already speculating about possible crossover moments.

Marinis, who has been helping steer “Grey’s Anatomy” in recent seasons, said she is excited to continue expanding the beloved franchise. “I am incredibly excited to expand the ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ universe,” Marinis said in a statement.

She continued, “This opportunity will bring new characters and stories to life that will embody the same heart, emotion, and connection audiences have loved from ‘Grey’s’ for more than two decades, all set in my home state of Texas.”

Marinis also thanked Rhimes for building the world that made the expansion possible. “I am so grateful to Shonda Rhimes for creating this dynamic world and feel so fortunate that I get to be a part of it,” she added.

The Texas-set drama will become the fourth spinoff of “Grey’s Anatomy,” which recently wrapped its 22nd season. Over the years, the medical juggernaut has expanded with shows including “Private Practice,” which aired for six seasons between 2007 and 2013, and “Station 19,” which ran for seven seasons before ending in 2024. The franchise also briefly expanded digitally with “Grey’s Anatomy: B-Team,” a short-form series released in 2018.

Before expanding into yet another spinoff, “Grey’s Anatomy” had already cemented itself as one of television’s most successful franchises. The medical drama first premiered on ABC in 2005 and made TV history in 2019 when it officially surpassed ER to become the longest-running primetime medical drama in U.S. television history. Since then, the series has crossed the 450-episode mark, proving the appetite for Grey Sloan drama is far from over.

Even Pompeo previously admitted she never expected the show to still be thriving more than 20 years later. “Obviously, I never anticipated the show still being the no. 1 show on the network,” Pompeo previously told PEOPLE. “How do you walk away from a hit? The fans will dictate when the show ends. As much as we think we’re in control, we’re not. It’s the fans’ show at this point. They control how long the show goes. We’ll see. I kind of just take it year by year and see.”

Pompeo also reflected on the behind-the-scenes challenges the series faced over the years, admitting it would have been easy to step away. “I think the biggest lesson is what something can be if you give it the chance to turn it around,” she explained. “We had so much drama in the early days. The show was so strong and so solid and so amazing, then we had all these behind-the-scenes drama and then it would’ve been really easy to walk away and say, ‘I don’t want to deal with that anymore.’”
