Things are getting even more intense in Rebel Wilson’s legal fight surrounding her directorial debut, “The Deb.”

The conflict involving the “Pitch Perfect” star and her fellow executives has spiraled from allegations of sexual harassment and financial misconduct to accusations that Wilson orchestrated a smear campaign against the filmmakers.

The latest twist comes after a judge ruled in favor of the producers.

A court of appeals has upheld the decision rejecting Wilson’s request to dismiss the defamation action filed against her. The “Senior Year” star attempted to have the lawsuit dismissed under California’s free speech protections, but both the lower court and the appellate court disagreed.

With the latest ruling, Wilson will now have to prove that the accusations she made were true and not knowingly false or malicious.

A source close to the case revealed how the ruling affects the “Pitch Perfect” star, telling Page Six, it “was supposed to be Rebel’s big bet” in getting the matter dismissed.

Attorney Camille Vasquez, known for representing Johnny Depp in his high-profile defamation case, is representing the producers, Amanda Ghost, Vince Holden, and Gregor Cameron.

She criticized Wilson for refusing to retract the accusations or apologize, saying Wilson wrongly believed free speech laws would protect her from legal consequences.

“That cynical legal gamble has spectacularly backfired,” Vasquez said. “This case is now heading to trial, and we look forward to seeing her in court.”

Following the latest update in the actress’ case, online reactions ranged from assessments of the ruling’s focus on accountability to comparisons with Blake Lively’s lawsuit.

One user on X wrote, “Well, I mean, Rebel Wilson was working with the same people that started the smear campaign against Blake Lively. Blake may be a total b-tch, but this speaks volumes.”

A second commentator argued that the ruling was about “accountability,” as harassment claims without evidence have consequences.

This observer noted that cases like this start as “‘industry talk’ and escalate to “full-blown public discourse,” and another pointed out that it becomes “more complicated the longer it goes.”

A fifth X user emphasized the legal system’s role in protecting against false claims, adding that the “truth must prevail.”

A different spectator explained that a judge granting a trial does not disprove Wilson’s claims but means “the court believes the defamation case deserves to be properly examined.”

As reactions continue to pour in ahead of the upcoming trial, Wilson is also facing another defamation dispute involving her co-star, Charlotte MacInnes.

Wilson appeared in a federal court in Sydney last month as proceedings in the matter began. As The Blast reported, MacInnes’ lawyers’ front-and-center argument was that Wilson coordinated a smear campaign through publicist Melissa Nathan, allegedly targeting producer Amanda Ghost.

MacInnes’s issue with Wilson began after she claimed she had expressed concerns about an encounter between the young actress and Ghost.

As part of their argument, MacInnes’s attorneys portrayed Wilson as a “bully” who used social media to damage the younger actress’s reputation.

The Blast reported that after Wilson took to Instagram to voice concerns about the alleged encounter between McInnes and Ghost, she later claimed MacInnes had changed her story.

Wilson added that McInnes withdrew the allegations after being offered a record deal and a lead role in a stage production.

However, the “North Shore” star denied Wilson’s claims and insisted Wilson’s public statements caused significant damage to her career and reputation.

While fans are now drawing comparisons between Wilson’s legal showdown and Blake Lively’s own dispute, it remains to be seen whether Wilson’s battle will end in a settlement similar to Lively’s.

According to The Blast, Lively and Justin Baldoni reached an agreement on May 4, just weeks before their matter was scheduled to head to trial.

In a joint statement, both stars emphasized that their shared goal of using the project to raise awareness for domestic violence survivors remained their top priority.

They also acknowledged the difficulties surrounding the dispute, noting that Lively’s concerns deserved to be heard while reaffirming their commitment to maintaining a respectful and safe working environment.
