Hayden Panettiere is baring it all in a new memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning.”

The actress, best known for portraying the character Claire Bennet on the superhero series “Heroes,” did not hold back talking about the unflattering sides of her life in the upcoming book.

From postpartum depression to her addiction struggles, Hayden Panettiere shared her vulnerabilities with fans in the emotional memoir. She also used the opportunity to call out a popular brand for dumping her in her hour of need.

Panettiere’s memoir, set to be released on May 19, captures her sharing her vulnerabilities with fans. An excerpt from the book details her battle with postpartum depression after welcoming her daughter, Kaya, in 2011. The child was born during her relationship with former professional boxer Wladimir Klitschko.

The actress explained that she had been abusing alcohol during her vulnerable state and was on insomnia medication. Things took a turn for the worse for Panettiere while filming season 4 of the “Nashville” series, recalling how she felt like “a zombie” that fateful day.

According to the excerpt published by The Cut, Panettiere was unable to shake off the effects of the insomnia medication and opted to take a nap before shooting. “Two hours later, I woke up in the hospital,” she wrote, noting a nurse told her a colleague had called an ambulance after failing to wake her up.

Naturally, Panettiere’s health scare sparked concern in both her private and professional life. Showrunners of the “Nashville” series prioritized her well-being above the show, opting to temporarily write out her character to allow Panettiere to enter rehab.

While her exit from the show was temporary, the same could not be said about her collaboration with a popular skincare brand. Panettiere recalled that she had issued a statement about her situation, receiving an outpouring of love and support from the public and the press.

“But a part of my career I’d come to depend on suffered. Neutrogena canceled my long-standing contract, and it was yet another blow in a year that had given almost nothing else,” Panettiere lamented. She had appeared in various advertising campaigns for the brand until their partnership ended in 2015.

Panettiere first addressed the end of her working relationship with Neutrogena in her cover story for US Weekly, published on May 6. During the interview, she was asked if some chapters in her memoir were more challenging to write than others.

The entertainer explained that she found the whole writing process “very scary,” as she put her abuse and trauma on paper. “I wanted to be brutally, painfully honest. When I was honest about postpartum depression on Live With Kelly and Michael [in 2015], the repercussions were shocking,” Panettiere shared.

According to Panettiere, she never expected to end the interview and then receive a call, saying, “Neutrogena wants to fire you. They’re not OK with this.” She stressed that she could not have been more stunned and disappointed by the brand’s lack of understanding, adding:

“Of all the things, how can they judge me about something that is so human and so real?”

Panettiere’s candid reflections continued in a recent appearance on Jay Shetty’s “On Purpose” podcast. The Blast covered the story, reporting that Panettiere had cleared the air about what happened when she gave up full custody of her daughter years ago.

She explained that she wasn’t coerced into signing the agreement in 2018, and shut down the conspiracy theories that she no longer cared about her daughter. Panettiere stressed that giving up full custody was necessary to get the help she needed to overcome her addictions.

Panettiere echoed similar sentiments in another interview, noting that losing custody of her daughter was a “living nightmare,” but she had to give it up for her daughter’s sake. Panettiere stated that she had been stuck in a “horrible cycle” of depression, anxiety, alcoholism, and more.

Panettiere’s rehabilitation stints continued in 2024, with The Blast reporting that a family member had staged an intervention to get her into a rehabilitation program. The incident, per a source, occurred on October 6, 2024, weeks after fans became worried about Panettiere.

The actress sparked concern on September 18, 2024, over her out-of-sorts behavior during an interview. Many suspected that Panettiere had returned to her dark past, but she shut down the substance abuse theories days later, blaming her behavior on exhaustion.

Nonetheless, a source noted that a family member staged an intervention and even kicked out Panettiere’s then-boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, out of her home. The former couple began an on-and-off-again romance in 2018, with more than one domestic violence incident in their rap sheet.
