Alan Hamel moved on two years after she passed away, and now they have crossed the first year milestone alongside a significant change in their living arrangement.

Suzanne Somers died after her battle with cancer in 2023 at age 76. She was married to Alan Hamel for 46 years, in what was recognized as one of Hollywood’s most enduring love stories.

The Canadian entertainer found love in the arms of his late wife’s co-star, Joanna Cassidy, and now they have taken a major step in their one-year-old relationship. He explained that the change in their living arrangement came because they were constantly traveling back and forth to see each other.

“I would describe us as living together ‘light.’ And when she needs a few days alone at her home, she’s OK that I see my girlfriends, who are only good friends, no romance,” Hamel noted.

He continues that he moved on based on the instructions left by his late wife, who told him not to mope around after her death and find love again at the right time. 

Hamel remained very convinced that Somers would have endorsed his relationship with Cassidy. The producer also confirmed to The Daily Mail that they intend to celebrate clocking one year of happiness together.

Hamel dove deeper into his enthralling love story with the 80-year-old actress, sharing that after Somers caved in to her battle with cancer in 2023, he accepted that being alone would be his new normal.

However, his son, Stephen Hamel, took matters into his own hands and suggested that a woman he met at a screening would be the best match for him. Turns out that woman was Cassidy, who starred alongside Somers in the mini series “Hollywood Wives” in 1985.

Hamel remembered that Cassidy also appeared on his talk show in Canada in 1978, and with all this information and history between them, the chemistry was instant, with their first date lasting three days.

The entertainer emphasized that he is grateful to have Cassidy in his life alongside his extraordinary family. He raved about Cassidy enjoying the amazing little moments in life, like enjoying live music in a local bar while dancing with new people.

The 89-year-old earlier revealed that, like most of his friendships, making connections with people has always been a highlight of his life. The Blast stated that Hamel expressed his gratitude for having discovered a romantic connection with his late wife’s co-star in such a manner.

In his words, “These are people that we just met somewhere, and a relationship happened, and it marinated over a bunch of years and brought along other people. And that’s really it. I never put any real energy into it.”

On whether they are in love, Hamel told PEOPLE during their interview that they are both in a good place and have an optimum idea of where things would go. They have also handled the distance between them pretty well when it happens, like staying on the phone for hours till the other end falls asleep, and so many.

He praised Cassidy as his ultimate confidant, who gets to hear the things he has never told anyone before in his life, and that makes him feel lucky.

In 2024, one year after Somers’ painful passing, Hamel hopped on the internet with a touching tribute about some of the challenges experienced at the start of their nearly 5-decade-old marriage. 

As stated by The Blast, Hamel confessed that for the first few years of their marriage, they fought like enemies but often found their way back to each other as if nothing had happened.

He excitedly shared their bond and how they went to bed every night holding hands, followed by touching mornings of him just reveling in Somers’ flawless beauty.

As for his new flame with Cassidy, the couple debuted during a staycation in Malibu, where they walked by the oceanside and later enjoyed lunch at the Broad Beach Oyster Company.

Hamel’s likeness for Somers and Cassidy carries a deep sense of similarity on his part, which, according to him, is the fact that both women were not controversial figures in the industry.

While Hamel admitted that she was gone, he still believed the actress visits him from time to time in the form of hummingbirds. One of the things the couple enjoyed during their pre-marital phase was going on dates and spending quality time with each other.

Hamel recalled the dazzling model dressing up all the time in incredible dresses which flattered her curves and drove him crazy while they dined the night away at their favorite, intimate French restaurants.

He added that they also loved to hike together in the mornings due to the nature of their residence alongside the California mountains in Malibu and Palm Springs.
