Martin Short is bouncing back from his grief!

The media personality has made his first public appearance since the death of his first daughter, Katherine Short, attending a major Netflix premiere in California.

Martin Short’s daughter was discovered dead at her home in Los Angeles due to an alleged suicide, causing a major change to his comedy touring schedule.

The TV star attended the premiere of his Netflix movie “Marty, Life Is Short” on Wednesday, May 6th, 2026, alongside his two sons. He showed up dressed in a navy suit and plaid tie combo, with his kids, Henry and Oliver Short, killing it in matching sunglasses.

Katherine died in February at age 42, according to an announcement made by Martin’s reps, stressing that the family was devastated by the loss. Katherine’s neighbor had disclosed in February that she showed no signs of distress before her death, and no one knew she was depressed despite living next to her for 10 years.

As shared by US Weekly, while Katherine was not the outgoing type, her neighbor confirmed that she was indeed friendly and loved to share laughs with her friends on her porch from time to time.

How The Family Coped With The Death Of Their Matriarch

The Canadian comedian welcomed Katherine, alongside her two brothers, with his late wife, Nancy Dolman, via adoption. Katherine lost his wife to ovarian cancer in 2010, and coping with the loss was not an easy step.

As stated by PEOPLE, two years after the incident, Martin confessed that it was tough for him and their children to handle the fact that she is no longer with them. In his words, “This is the thing of life that we live in denial about, that it will ever happen to our loved ones or us, and when it does, you gain a little, and you suffer a little. There’s no big surprise.”

Katherine graduated from New York University in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and gender sexuality studies in 2006. She went further to pursue a master’s degree in social work from the University of Southern California in 2010.

The late Katherine was hired by UCLA’s Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital, where she worked for over four years before she proceeded to work at the dual-diagnosis outpatient program at Camden Center.

The Canadian actor was last sighted with his daughter in public in 2023 when she marked her 40th birthday at the Grandmaster Recorders, a multipurpose venue featuring an Italian-Australian restaurant. As stated by The Blast, the party was graced by Hollywood famous faces, including Kurt Russell, Goldie Hawn, Bo Welch, Joni Mitchell, and the late Catherine O’Hara.

In 2012, Katherine tightened her resolve to live outside of her father’s popularity by dropping the “Short” last name and sticking to “Katherine Elizabeth Hartley.” She explained in her filing that she decided to change the name due to concerns about possible harassment from future patients due to her connection to the comedian.

She added that she did not want anything to do with the fame attached to Short’s name, who at the time was gaining significant momentum in Hollywood.

The 76-Year-Old’s Close Friend Felt The Weight Of His Grief

Martin was not left alone with the pangs of his loss; in fact, a couple of his friends were pictured checking into his home when the news of his daughter’s death. His rumored romantic interest, Meryl Streep, reportedly experienced a different side to him due to the difficulty in offering him much-needed consolation amid his sadness.

The actor reportedly pushed everyone in his circle away, including Streep, although she has continued to check in and offer help in several ways possible. The insider added that the dominant theme in Martin’s world is that he needed as much space as possible to enable him to grieve.

However, the actor was expected to bounce back soon enough so they could go back to being great friends. As for the nature of their relationship, the duo has neither confirmed nor denied if they are more than friends.

Martin Short Skipped The 2026 Actors Awards

The 76-year-old did not join some of his “Only Murders In The Building” co-stars at the 2026 edition of the Actors Awards. Despite being nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series, the actor was not present.

Last year, Short went home winning the award for that same category, but Seth Rogen took home the win this year. The “Only Murders in the Building “cast was also nominated for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series, an award they won last year.

His other castmates, Steve Martin and Selena Gomez, were also absent at the event, which was held at the Shrine Expo Hall in Los Angeles, in a show of support for the actor as he continues to grieve the death of her daughter.
