Luigi Mangione clocked 28, and his purse certainly got bigger!
The former data engineer received a hefty donation on his birthday, which he marked behind bars as he awaits 2 murder trials for a 2024 murder incident.
Luigi Mangione, earlier in the year, escaped the death penalty in his case, where he is fighting off federal and state charges connecting him to the death of Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare.
Luigi Mangione’s Legal Defense Fund Enjoyed A Major Boost On His Birthday

The newly minted 28-year-old received a $28,038 donation today from a man named Carl, which has now placed the overall donated funds towards his freedom to $1.5 million.
The benevolent Carl declared in his post, where he announced the donation, that a significant percentage of the funds would also go toward supporting victims in similar situations. He added that it was unfortunate private assistance had become necessary in Mangione’s case, given the extensive list of charges he currently faces.
Since his arrest, the former data scientist has become something of a heroic personality among critics of the healthcare industry, who share the thought that insurance executives are fueled by selfishness.
As noted by TMZ, prosecutors in the case alleged that Mangione fatally shot Thompson on a Manhattan street in 2024. They had claimed that the 28-year-old viewed insurance companies as opportunists who go after the pockets of everyday Americans.
How The 28-Year-Old Won Against The Death Penalty Campaign

As noted by The Blast, Mangione secured a major victory in his ongoing case after the trial judge declared that the death penalty would not be a factor in his federal case. Federal prosecutors had reportedly been requesting that the stalking charges against Mangione be identified as crimes of violence, which could have led to a federal murder charge.
The judge, however, determined that stalking was not classified as a crime of violence, adding that the former data engineer cannot be charged with murder in a federal court. Mangione currently only faces stalking charges and may get the maximum sentence of life in prison without parole if found guilty.
However, he remains charged for murder in a New York state court where the death penalty is not an option. One huge win prosecutors did get in court is the judge’s ruling that evidence found in Mangione’s backpack can be introduced at trial.
The evidence had been questioned by his defense team, who had said that the Federal agents had searched him without a warrant. The backpack in which they say Mangione kept his gun and diary containing very detailed confessions will be presented to jurors.
Luigi Mangione Became An Internet Sensation Following His Arrest

The presence of millions of dollars in the 28-year-old’s treasury does not come as a surprise because he has grown to become an overnight internet hero following his arrest. As Mangione’s case unfolded, it broke the Internet and garnered attention from many disgruntled consumers already upset by the health insurance industry.
After his arrest, the controversy about the case led to general discussion about the need for a significant overhaul of the health care system in the United States. Mangione’s legal team then fed into the momentum and created a website to keep up to date and answer some of the public’s common questions.
Mangione had also previously thanked his supporters for the surging support he received since his arrest on the platform. Federal authorities state that Mangione fatally shot Thompson in New York before running away from the scene, but the accusations did not seem to affect the teeming public support of Mangione.
Throughout the case, supporters of various races, political parties, and social backgrounds kept supporting him in his journey to gaining freedom.
The University Of Pennsylvania Alumnus Was Displeased With His June Trial Date

In February, The Blast noted that Mangione appeared displeased in court after hearing that the judge set June 8, 2026, as the new date for his trial for the murder of the healthcare CEO. Mangione challenged the new date in court, which Judge Gregory Carro set.
According to the former techie, Carro’s decision was a significant move in a timeline already set for October by another federal judge in the Southern District of New York. The media personality emphasized that the decision by the judge was double jeopardy and essentially the same as taking the same trial twice.
Judge Margaret Garnett scheduled Mangione for a trial by October 12, 2026, which might have been perfect for his lawyers, who stressed that the new June date would not give them ample time to prepare a good case.
Luigi Mangione’s Defense Team Trashed Trump’s Comparison

Last September, Mangione’s attorney stressed the Trump administration was undermining his ability to get a fair trial by making unfair comparisons to the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
In a letter to the federal court, Mangione’s attorneys said the government had tried to link their client to other unrelated incidents of political violence as part of a tactic to influence public opinion against him. The filing said the administration had drummed up Mangione to extremist groups and violence when there is barely any evidence of his connection or affiliation with these outfits.
The defense team also referenced the assassination of Kirk on September 10 as an example of harmful narratives that made people wonder about Mangione more. Mangione is represented by high-profile tag team couple Karen Friedman Agnifilo and Marc Agnifilo of Agnifilo Intrater LLP in New York.
