Anne Heche was known for being bold, but one behind-the-scenes clash from the height of her fame is now resurfacing with surprising new detail.
A former entertainment journalist claims a routine interview spiraled into a tense confrontation, all tied to Heche’s relationship with Ellen DeGeneres and rumors she was desperate to shut down.
According to the account, what followed wasn’t just a heated exchange, as it ended in a mystery that has never been fully explained.
Anne Heche Interview Took A Turn Over Vince Vaughn Rumors

Anne Heche’s alleged clash began during a 1998 interview tied to her role in the “Psycho” remake alongside Vince Vaughn.
At the time, the actress was newly involved with Ellen DeGeneres, and whispers about a possible on-set romance with Vaughn were already circulating.
Fran Weinstein, a former Entertainment Tonight producer, recalled how a routine question quickly changed the mood.
“After asking the perfunctory questions, I asked her, ‘How much fun was it to reunite with Vince Vaughn?’” Weinstein said per Page Six.
The conversation seemed normal at first, but the tension grew when the topic shifted. When Weinstein pressed further, saying, “‘Well, rumor had it that you guys were an item while making the movie,’” she claimed Heche reacted immediately.
“Oh, my God. Her jaw dropped to the floor, and she said, ‘I don’t want you to talk about it. I don’t want anybody to know about this. I don’t want my girlfriend to know about it,” the producer shared.
Weinstein explained that Heche had “just gotten together with Ellen DeGeneres” and didn’t want anything to complicate the new relationship.
Heche Repeatedly Tried To Shut Down The Conversation

Despite the tension, the interview continued for several more minutes, shifting away from the rumors and into lighter topics.
Weinstein said they discussed Anne Heche’s holiday plans with DeGeneres, and it seemed like the uncomfortable moment had passed.
However, as the interview wrapped, the “Spread” actress reportedly made her position clear once again.
“She whips her head around and says to me, ‘I don’t want you to use that stuff about me and Vince Vaughn,’” Weinstein recalled.
Weinstein insisted she had already agreed, responding, “No problem. I told you I wouldn’t. Have a nice day.”
At that point, the crew began packing up, believing everything had been settled. However, the situation quickly escalated beyond a simple request.
Anne Heche Allegedly Demanded The Tape In Escalating Standoff

According to Weinstein, the situation took a dramatic turn when members of Heche’s team began returning to the room with a specific demand.
First came the studio publicist. “She goes, ‘Fran, she wants the tape.’ I said, ‘What? That’s not happening. We don’t do that,’” Weinstein recounted.
She said she refused, explaining that handing over footage would set a bad precedent. However, the requests didn’t stop there. Soon after, Heche’s personal publicist arrived with the same demand.
“He said, ‘She wants the tape back.’ I said, ‘She’s not getting the tape, OK? This is a dangerous precedent, and we’re not setting it now,’” Weinstein shared.
The situation intensified when the publicist warned her, “‘If you don’t give her the tape, you’ll never get another interview with her again.’” Weinstein’s response was firm, stating, “‘I don’t care.’” What followed was an even more direct confrontation.
Heche Confrontation Turned Into Heated Showdown

Weinstein claimed she encountered Anne Heche again near the elevators, where emotions boiled over.
She explained, “I’m wagging my finger in her face: ‘You’re not getting the tape.’ She starts screaming at me: ‘You don’t respect me! You don’t respect my girlfriend!’”
The confrontation allegedly continued back inside the hotel suite, turning into a chaotic argument. Weinstein described Heche as chain-smoking while tensions rose, while she herself tried to calm the situation.
Eventually, exhausted, Weinstein said she lay down briefly, a decision she later called “my fatal mistake.”
According to her, “I just felt like this wind came over me,” she said. “It was like a ghost had been in the room. I looked up, and she’s gone. And guess what? My tape is gone.”
Anne Heche Tape Mystery Remains Unresolved Years Later

The disappearance of the tape became the most puzzling part of the story. Weinstein said she immediately reacted, running through the hotel and threatening to call the police.
A publicist reportedly urged her to stop, warning that “it’ll get in the papers.” She eventually tracked Heche down in another suite, where the movie star appeared calm. When confronted, Weinstein said Heche responded, “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
By the time authorities were contacted, Weinstein claimed Heche and her team had already left New York. The incident made headlines, but Heche’s side denied any wrongdoing.
A representative stated she “finished the interview, never left with the tape and doesn’t have it now.”
Even years later, Weinstein said she still doesn’t know what happened, though she shared one theory: “Years later, I was told by a pretty good source that she had instructed this person in her entourage to throw the tape into a New York City sewer.”
Anne Heche later died in 2022 at age 53 following a car crash in Los Angeles, with her death ruled accidental.
Meanwhile, Heche’s manager has pushed back on the claims, saying that the account is “inaccurate.”
In a statement, he expressed disappointment that untrue narratives were circulating at a time when honesty and respect should come first. According to him, the focus should be on honoring her memory rather than rewriting it to sell books.
