Tensions inside the royal family have been simmering for years, but a new account suggests one moment changed everything for Kate Middleton. 

Long known as the calm figure trying to keep peace between Prince William and Prince Harry, the Princess of Wales reportedly reached a breaking point after a deeply personal issue was brought into the public spotlight. 

According to a royal author, the situation did more than hurt feelings as it reshaped relationships that had already been hanging by a thread.

According to royal expert Christopher Andersen, Kate Middleton’s patience was tested following Prince Harry’s BBC interview in May 2025, where he spoke openly about his father’s health. 

In Us Weekly’s exclusive excerpt from “Kate! The Courage, Grace, and Power of the Woman Who Will Be Queen,” set to be released on May 5, Andersen explained, “The damage was done: seeds of doubt concerning the King’s chances for a full recovery had been sown.”

During the interview, Harry said, “I don’t know how much longer my father has,” a remark that struck a nerve within the royal household. 

According to Andersen, Kate was “more disappointed than angry,” but the comment still carried weight.

Kate’s Bond With King Charles Made The Situation Personal

Kate Middleton’s reaction cannot be separated from her close relationship with King Charles, especially after both faced cancer diagnoses within months of each other. 

The monarch went public with his diagnosis in February 2024, while Kate shared her own the following month before later announcing she was in remission.

Explaining why the situation hit harder, Andersen said, “I think Kate’s relationship with her father-in-law over their shared cancer battles really has made her much more sensitive to King Charles’s feelings.”

He added, “She knows better than anyone that having someone publicly imply you may be at death’s door is horribly demoralizing.”

Kate’s personal experience made Harry’s comment feel more than just inappropriate, as it hit close to home. 

“I’m sure Kate must have felt stung by that comment as well, since she is in a situation very similar to the king’s,” the expert noted.

Kate Middleton’s Role As Peacemaker Changed After Years Of Effort

For years, Kate had been described as the steady presence trying to hold the family together. 

Andersen emphasized that she had been the “level-headed one” working to “bridge the widening gap between the brothers.”

Another of Andersen’s excerpts further cemented her reputation. “Princess Catherine is ‘the sweetest, most loving person you could ever know,’ said a Sandringham staffer, ‘but like everyone else, she has her limits,’” the excerpt read.

That image of calm diplomacy had defined her approach to the ongoing rift. Despite Harry’s earlier criticisms of the royal family, including in his memoir “Spare” and multiple interviews, Kate had continued trying to maintain some form of connection.

Kate Fully Supports Prince William As Rift Deepens

Prince William’s reaction to Harry’s interview was immediate and intense.

Andersen wrote, “But William, who had already slammed the door shut on his brother over what Harry wrote in Spare, was, in the words of a courtier, ‘apoplectic’ with rage.”

That moment pushed things even further. According to the excerpt, “Now it was time to nail the door shut once and for all, and for the first time Kate, who had worked harder than anyone to mend the rift between the brothers, willingly handed her husband a hammer.”

Kate Middleton’s Future Relationship With Prince Harry Remains Uncertain

The long-term impact of this moment appears significant. Andersen suggested that the relationship between Kate and the Duke of Sussex may not recover anytime soon.

He said he doesn’t see them “having any sort of relationship” going forward, adding, “At least not for the foreseeable future.”

Meanwhile, Prince Harry has remained estranged from both his father and his brother since stepping back from royal duties in January 2020, alongside Meghan Markle. 

The couple now lives in Montecito, California, with their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

In the years since, Harry has spoken openly about the royal family in interviews and in his 2023 memoir, “Spare.” 

Despite that, he has also expressed a desire to reconcile with his father and brother.
